Can 2 Year Olds Get Strep Throat
3.5 year olds adenoids to be removed. Should we get second opinion? I believe they enlarged after strep throat at christmas. Can they shrink naturally
Maybe, maybe not: Removal should be based on the overall picture of the child's health. If snoring at night and showing other signs of potential sleep apnea, it would tend to worsen for several years before some relative decrease in size would be expected (after age 8-10). If truly symptomatic of sleep disturbance, this can improve the quality of life and avoid worsening issues. If not, no hurry. ...Read more
5 year old has strep throat and Cant get him to take the nasty medicine they prescribed. Cefdirin. They refuse to switch why can't he take amoxicilLin?
Switch or shot: I see no reason not to switch, and wonder why they would use such a foul tasting and expensive med to start with. If the kid won't take any oral med, a LA Bicillin shot would also work. ...Read more
I am a 32 yr old female who in the last year has had 6 reoccuring episodes of strep throat. Only life change is 2 guinea pigs. Corrolation?
Not really: We do not really worry about strep throat in people over 18 years. We worry about the development of rheumatic heart disease which doesn't begin afresh in people of your age. You could be a carrier. You could have strep in your throat when you have no symptoms and are feeling fine. You should get a culture then and if positive get a different treatment to treat carrier status. ...Read more
I have a 2 year old and the Dr. Diagnost her with strep throat they gave her shot Tuesday how long does strep throat last. She still has pain?
Not unusual: I would run it by the doc that saw her Tuesday, because there are rare things that could be complicating her strep throat, like an abscess, but it is not all that unusual to feel crappy for 5-7 days if had a bad case of it. It is natures way of letting you know it is still fighting the infection and you need rest and nutrition. If still running a fever, definitely give doc a call back! ...Read more

Cousin has strep throat spent all day with her a couple days before she found out my 1 and 5 year niece was with us should we get checked?
Some people claim: They can tell by looking, but the only way is a culture. Since post strep, poorly or inadequately treated can lead to heart and kidney problems (rheumatoid heart disease glomerular nephritis), it's best to find out and treat appropriately. But using ab's if it is proven leads to resistant orgamisms and problems in your system. Culture! ...Read more
Not especially: In most cases it is relatively mild and easy to treat. In the pre-antibiotic era, some strains would lead to scarlet fever with prolonged high fever/rash. Today even these strains rarely lead to problems if you get the kid evaluated and treated. Untreated strep has about1/200 risk of rheumatic fever. So there are ways it can be bad, but when properly evaluated & treated it is minor. ...Read more
My daughter has had strep throat at least every other month this passed year. A relative of mine told me to ask to get her tested for pandas. Should I?
PANDAS: Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Strep is a relatively rare condition. The presence of frequent strep infections alone is not PANDAS- as the name implies, neuropsychiatric behaviors are the hallmark with the proper history. There is no "test" the diagnosis is based on history and physical findings alone. Discuss with your pediatrician. ...Read more
My 36lb. 3 1/2 year old son was prescribed amoxicillin 400mg/5ml at a dosage of 8 mls. Twice a day for strep throat. I am concerned that the dosage is?
Dosage is fine: More than that can be given in other acute infections, although for a strep throat 5-6 ml /dose would suffice given your son's weight, but the extra 2-3 ml wouldn't be harmful, probably your son's doctor suspected an upper respiratory infection as well such as acute sinusitis. You may want to verify it with your doctor if you're concerned, otherwise continue till the follow up visit, good luck ...Read more
My three year old was just diagnosed with strep throat for the third time in a month. How to prevent this?
Reculture for strep: Your doctor should recheck her throat culture after completing her current course of antibiotics. If that test is positive with no symptoms, your child should be treated with a special antibiotic to treat the carrier state. Family contacts should be checked regardless of lack of symptoms. If your child is in daycare, you may want to mention it to the director to alert parents of this issue. ...Read more

Why for the past few years do I get strep throat 3+ times a year when I don't have tonsils? Possible causes?
Strep or not strep?: Germs can infect the walls of your throat, even when you don't have tonsils. Cold viruses can cause a sore throat, so 3+ episodes of these a year are common. If you have true streptococcus bacterial infections (verified by testing) often, you or a member of your household may be a carrier. That is, your immune system lets strep bacteria live like squatters in your throat, instead of killing them. ...Read more
2 year old has strep throat. Taking meds for 3 days. No fever but. Now sleeps all the time...is this normal?
Treated?: A strep infection is very easily treated with penicillins, But you need to complete the therapy. If the fever and other symptoms are gone, the sleepiness should not be an issue. If you think this is excessive, though a quick check up at the pediatrician may be a good idea to reassure nothing has taken a turn for the worse. ...Read more
My 2 year old twins have strep throat and have been taking anitbiotics since monday. One has a barky sounding cough. Is this still strep?
No, most are viruses: The fact that strep is found does not mean that strep was positive of symptoms. Most cold-type illnesses such as that with your twins' cough are viral. Probably initial symptoms were viral-related. Swab was done in strep was found. There is a latin expression "post hoc ergo propter hoc": meaning: since strep was found, it is presumed to be the cause of symptoms. Not necessarily so. ...Read more
My 2 year old Has strep throat, she got a shot on Wednesday morning it's Saturday and she is still not feeling good and shehas blister in her mouth?
It happens: Did they verify the strep with a test? Was the shot a penicillin based drug? Even if both were done, some kids carry additional throat germs (viruses) as a co-infection and take longer to improve. As long as the kid stays well hydrated and is feeding okay, you can monitor through the weekend. Call the office on Monday if things are not improving. ...Read more
My 4 year old granddaughter is recovering from "fifth" disease. The rash and low grade fever have been gone for a few days. Strep throat was ruled out by 2 different doctors. Both say it's "fifth disease" however, she seems to be pale. She is eating, p
Fifths: Fifths disease is a common, relatively harmless viral infection - most often seen in kids and characterized by red cheeks followed by a lacy rash on the arms, legs and body. Some people will also have fever for a day or two. It typically resolves on its own without treatment. The only time we really worry about this virus is if it infects someone who is pregnant or someone with a chronic blood disease such as sickle cell anemia, thalessemia, or spherocytosis. The virus can stop the bone marrow from producing red blood cells for a short period of time. This does not usually affect a healthy person, but can affect someone who's red blood cells are not normal in the first place. I attached a website with more information about fifths disease. If she has a chronic blood disease, if her paleness continues, or if she is acting sick at all, give her doctor a call. Good luck! ...Read more
Yes: His/her dr. Can test for strep. We usually prefer to make a single diagnosis, but both could co-exist. Strep throat should be treated with an antibiotic. There is only symptomatic relief for the flu. Tamiflu (oseltamivir) is said to reduce flu symptoms for beween 1/2 - 1 day and probably not worth taking. ...Read more
5 year old positive for strep throat. Treated with amoxicillin for 10 days. 1 week later strep returned. Now given Penicillan. Will it work?
I constantly get strep throat about 3 to four times a year. Can removing my tonsils help prevent step throat? What are other things I can do to stop it
Yes and no: The removal of the palatine tonsils can reduce the "intensity" of illness when you get strep in the future, but it does not prevent you from getting it. After the tonsils are removed, there are still tissues and glands in the throat that can become infected, with the same risk of immune mediated complications. ...Read more
My 9 year old daughter had strep throat and bronchitis about 3 weeks ago, and was put on amoxcillan, now has a almost laringitis...dr's again????
New problem: Laryngitis is usually a viral infection involving the vocal cords and is quite separate from strep 3 weeks ago. If she in unable to drink, play and get comfortable you may want to have her seen. If she is keeping up with her fluid needs, eating and functioning pretty well you can ride it out at home. ...Read more
My 3 year old daughter started amoxicillin at 8:30pm sunday night for strep throat. It is now 11am Tuesday and she still has a fever. Is this normal?
It happens: We know the strep germ is universally sensitive (killed) by amoxicillin, so it is a good drug. You also play catch up to the well established illness, and it can take time to get rid of fever or other symptoms. There is also the possibility that the kid has a co-infection with a virus that adds to the problem and is not influenced by the drug. Give it a little more time. ...Read more
My 14 year old son has had strep throat for 7 days now. He is still running a 100+ fever every now and then. He has been on amoxicillin for four days?
Re exam: With adequately treated strep, fever should be resolved by day 4. Have him seen again if he wakes with a fever tomorrow. How was strep diagnosed? By rapid test? By culture? How is his pain? Is he having any drooling or trouble swallowing? Asymmetry of tonsils? Persistent infection can hide various places. Also, if no cx or testing done, several viruses may be culprit, mononucleosis among them ...Read more
I always have a low fever today I have 99.7, sore throat, cough, congestion, achy. I'm a 55 year old female. Could this be strep throat?
I'm a 35 year old adult within 3 weeks I have got strep throat and this last time severe joint pain hands, knees and back. I don't feel any better?
Post Strep: There are poststreptococcal arthritis syndromes. The best known is acute rheumatic fever. More often in adults we see post streptococcal arthritis. I cannot say for sure you have that picture need an evaluation. Often if your strep throat is treated soon enough such occurrences can be prevented. Your arthritis evaluation will clarify that. ...Read more
Can I break in half and crush a 500 mg azithromycin to give 250mg to my 78 lb 7 year old boy with strep throat? No clinics open today and he's in pain
No: There's no way you can know he has strep throat. Doctors can't either without a test. Most sore throats are caused by viruses and shouldn't be treated with antibiotics. Also, antibiotics have very little effect on the symptoms of strep throat. They're given only to prevent rare complications. ...Read more
