Infections are invasions of some other organism (fungus, bacteria, parasite) or viruses into places where they do not belong. For instance, we have normal gut bacteria that live within us without causing problems; however, when those penetrate the bowel wall and enter the bloodstream, ...Read more
Is Flagyl used to treat dental infections/dental abscess I was presribed penveek and flagyl, is this okay?
I took vibramycin (doxycycline) 100mg capsule along with Flagyl (1 each) for dental infection and now my stomach is burning like nausea. Took it after food.
I was given Flagyl 250 to cure my ecoli infection. Is that the right strength? I remember being given Flagyl 500?
Wrong antibiotic: If you've been given Flagyl for an E. coli infection- that doesn't make proper sense, since it will not work against E. coli. I would call the doctor to ask 'what' they are actually treating and why. There are different doses of Flagyl (metronidazole) and 500 mg is a standard dose. Sometimes a doctor will dose adjust a medication depending on the patient and the infection. You need to get answers. ...Read more
Good morning doctors! Thank you for taking time out of your day to answer questions. Can Flagyl be used for u.T.I infections? Thank you.
Usually not: Flagyl would cover many bacteria found in vaginal infections and other conditions but not necessarily be a good choice for uti. After culture results are known, it may be found to be effective against the infecting organism, but it doesn't work well for several common bacteria which cause uti. It is not a common first-line agent. ...Read more
Cdiff infection 2/23-3/10. Then again positive since 3/25. I don't feel ill. Had flagyl and vancomycin. Why is it still here? I must return to work.
Yes: Higher dose of oral vanco 500 mg 4 times per day for 2 weeks then taper slowly over 6 weeks. Other option is fodaximycin (expensive new drug) thee option if those failed and u get another recurrence then stool transplant. Simple advise to avoid recurrence ; don't take antibiotics for cold or Ito that is not even symptomatic. I mean take the antibiotics only if really needed ...Read more
Is there anything new in treating infection in a jpouch. Currently using flagyl. Makes me sick to use. Infect every three months.
Pouchitis: Referred to as "pouchitis" many times by surgeons. Ciprofloxacin can be used to treat as well. Viral infections are common as well...So just keep in mind that all the antibiotics in the world won't help this. Other less commonly used antibiotics (that I use. Include - rifaximin, Clarithromycin and dificid). ...Read more
Yeast infection: Yes, it's possible. Antibiotics are used to treat infection - they kill the infection causing bacteria. However, they also kill off the normal bacteria that inhabit the body, and this can then allow for overgrowth of yeast. It's not uncommon for women, particularly, to develop yeast infections during/after a course of antibiotics. ...Read more
Any suggestions or alternatives to clearing up a BV recurring infection besides Flagyl or creams. I am having no such luck and keep coming.
Good question: It may have to do with the change in the normal bacteria population that inhabits the vaginal (typically lactobacillus). In bv, the population has shifted to other types of bacteria that produce the 'amine' like odor. Recommend seeing your gynecologist to discuss alternatives. ...Read more
It may.: Yeast infections are due to a fungus called candida which is normally found in the vagina. However, if there is a lack of healthy vaginal bacteria it can lead to overgrowth of yeast. Some causes of overgrowth: antibiotics, ^ estrogen (pregnancy or some birth control pills), malfunctioning immune system, diabetes mellitus as well as friction against vaginal tissues (intercourse) and douching. ...Read more

Need diagnosis: Although Metronidazole (flagyl) may be helpful in some cases of bacterial vaginitis, some bacteria (aerobes) may be quite resistant. Check with your ob/gyn, first for a specific diagnosis, and then for therapeutic recommendations. Flagyl may be helpful for trichomonas vaginitis, which is not bacterial and you may be dealing with more than a single problem. Hope you are better soon. ...Read more
Husband was prescribed 500 mg cipro (ciprofloxacin) 2Xaday for 30 days and 500mg flagyl 3X aday for 21 days. He told me I needed to be tested for infection. Reasons?
Speak with spouse.: Clearly your husband is being treated for an infection. It is important that the two of you discuss what infection he is being treated for. (Or another possible reason is that it he is a contact of someone who has an infection). Bottom line - the two of you need to discuss this. Asking an unknown provider on-line to guess about the reason isn't in your best interest. Take care. ...Read more
I was diagnosed with acute severe vulvovaginitis three weeks ago. I was prescribed Flagyl and I took the entire prescription. My infection came back and it's worse than ever, it spread to my anus. What should I do?
Different germs: If an infection does not respond to antibiotic treatment, either the wrong antibiotic was picked, or the germs are resistant against the antibiotic. Resistance to antibiotics in female vulvovaginitis is not really a problem. Sometimes, antibiotics cause an exacerbation of a mild yeast infection and the patient jumps from the fire into the frying pan. ...Read more

Enterocolitis: If blood and stool cultures were obtained are available now and could direct a more effective course of antibiotics.
