A calorie is the amount of heat energy needed to increase a mililiter of water 1 degree centigrade, the calorie we talk about in foods is really a kilocalorie, that is the amount of energy needed to increase a liter of water 1 degree centigrade... So if you eat a food that is 500 calories that food if burned completely has enough energy to heat a liter of ...Read more

It's all relative.: For very low calorie diets, potatoes are relatively high calorie [1 cup of diced potato is 55 calories] compared to 1 serving of turnips or even better deal cooked radishes/daikon. But potatoes are a good deal compared to 1/2 cup of white rice [120 calories], 1 cup of noodles, bread or bagels. So it depends on how low you're trying to go. ...Read more

Please I need a healthy diet for 800 calories without these intolerances: wheat - potato - strawberries - egg - haddock fish?
See nutritionist: You require far more detail than can be explained on this site; in addition, I don't feel there is a healthy, 800 calorie a day diet. I would seek a nutritionist for counselling and determining what calorie count is appropriate and how to achieve that with your food intolerances. ...Read more

If a person were to eat only mashed potatoes and drink only water every day for a month, how would that affect their body?
The past two times I've used the bathroom my urine has smelled like mashed potatoes, but I haven't had mashed potatoes recently. Why is this?
I choke at least once almost every meal. No matter the size of bite or how well I chew. I even choked on mashed potatoes b4. Why am I getting choked?
Choking: Choking on food is fairly common, but usually needs to be checked out. It can be a function of a partial blockage in the esophagus or a problem with the swallowing mechanism itself. Either way, you should see your doctor or a gastroenterologist for evaluation. Good luck. ...Read more
I noticed KFC restaurant has gone to styrofoam containers for hot mashed potatoes. I have eaten from these containers many times and have noticed a bad chemical taste when I get to the bottom of the container. Is my health in danger long term? How?
Plastic containers: Of any kind can put toxins into food, especially when heated. This MAY be just one more source of collecting toxins in the body. Anything we can do to eliminate toxins is good. Please do not re-heat in any type of plastic or use Teflon frying pans. Some people naturally detox better than others. Peace and good health. ...Read more

He eats burgers pizza fries mashed potatoes and pasta and that's it are there health programs to help him learn how to eat better?
See nutritionist: It sounds like a visit to a nutritionist would be a good idea. Also just a discussion with the family doctor could help with understanding the long term problems with such a diet. Please also understand that people have to be motivated to change their behaviior (or food) or all the education in the world will not help. ...Read more
Why are potatoes getting a bad reputation? Isn't it the fatty chips that are bad? What about mashed?
Carbs galore: Potatoes are not vegetables and don't have all the nutritional goodies that veggies do. Potatoes are just complex carbs. Carb heavy diets are generally speaking not good for long term health. In moderation, like most things is probably ok. Although the term " moderation" means different things to different people.:). ...Read more
Can't be good just to eat mash potatoes and a few chips for a whole days nutrition would dis effect her?
For 1 day only?: Of course this isn't a nutritionally healthy food plan for long term, as it isn't sustainable. It provides mostly starch -- and little protein, minerals, or vitamins. Eating this for one day only, though, isn't likely to harm a basically healthy person. If the person is diabetic, blood sugars could be affected. ...Read more
How can I keep my 8mo from gagging every time I introduce a new texture in food? She exorcist-like vomited when mashed potatoes reached mid tongue.
Like and not like: Apparently she likes to let you know if she doesn't like something. Maybe you can mix new things in a little at a time with foods she likes. But... Good luck with that. I was never able to change what they liked and didn't like. ...Read more
My 1yo needs to start on Pediasure or Carnation Instant breakfast for calories (FTT), is there a "healthier" option or do I not worry about "organic"?
Depends: The Carnation product added to milk or almond milk can provide similar nutrients for a fraction of the cost of Pediasure. If your doc has explored the issues with your kids FTT and suggests a supplement, it is worth a try. Either has defined caloric and nutrient content that can support growth and make up for deficiencies in prior food seeking behavior. Continued followup is important. ...Read more
Burned my esophagus all the way down on hot microwave mashed potatoes. I noticed it's hurting again after 1week. Mild pain. Should I be seen by doc?
Burnt esophagus: If pain, difficulty swallowing are present, you will need to see a doc to make sure there is no infection or ulcers going on. If the pain is mild and overall has improved and no other symptoms are present, you may watch it. Make sure to avoid foods known to cause/aggravate your symptoms.
