Depends on RICE and : By use of nsaids for pain and swelling. Rice=rest, ice, compression and elevation of the extremity, to allow the acute symptoms to subside, for the first 3-5 days, then heat packs would probably help in relieving the symptoms. Pt for stretching & strengthening exercises would help. Nsaids would help relieve the pain & swelling. Crutches will help. See an orhopod if no improvement in 2-3 weeks. ...Read more

Can easily last wks: A calf strain - even mild - can last for 1-3 weeks. The calf is used all the time throughout a typical day so it's hard to truly rest it and allow it to heal. Rest from aggravating activity as much as you can, use ice and NSAIDs as needed for relief, and do gentle stretching daily to maintain/regain flexibility.
