What is a bun/creatinine ratio? How is it calculated and if mine is 22 but my other levels are fine what should I do?

What is a bun/creatinine ratio? How is it calculated and if mine is 22 but my other levels are fine what should I do?

What are the actual: Numbers? BUN number divided by creatinine number. Normal range is 10-20. 22 may not be abnormal if individual levels of BUN and creatinine are normal. Discuss the numbers with your doctor at the next visit.

Meaning of bun/creatinine ratio?

Meaning of bun/creatinine ratio?

Defines kidney prob: Bun=blood urea nitrogen, byproduct of proteins ingested, if rise to high levels due to kidney problem, can cause toxic affects on the body. Creatinine= measurement of renal function. Normal bun/cr ratio about 10. The higher that ratio, the more likely it is not intrinsic kidney disease per se, but reduction in blood flow or volume to kidney, like when on strong diuretic-prerenal-reversible.

What causes elevated bun/creatinine ratio?

Decrease in flow.: Bun=blood urea nitrogen, byproduct of proteins ingested, if rise to high levels due to kidney problem, can cause toxic affects on the body.

What causes elevated bun/creatinine ratio?

Many causes: Blood tests called BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and cr (creatinine) are often checked to help evaluate kidney function. The normal bun/cr ration is about 10:1 to 15:1. Some of the more common causes of an elevated bun/cr ratio are: dehydration, GI bleeding, increased protein intake, small amount of muscle mass, increased muscle breakdown.

What's the meaning of high bun/creatinine ratio?

See below: An elevated BUN with normal creatinine and a ratio of [generally more than 18-20] occurs most commonly in dehydrated individuals and is not a sign of kidney damage. It may also occur in in certain other conditions like bleeding in the intestines, artificial nutrition intravenously of Amino Acids and use of steroids.

What means bun/creatinine ratio and elevated alt?

Renal and liver test: Alt-liver enzyme-c priors. Bun=blood urea nitrogen, byproduct of proteins ingested, if rise to high levels due to kidney problem, can cause toxic affects on the body. Creatinine= measurement of renal function. Normal bun/cr ratio about 10. The higher that ratio, the more likely it is not kidney disease per se, but reduction in blood flow or volume to kidney, like when on strong diuretic-prerenal.

How can the bun/creatinine ratio show dehydration?

How can the bun/creatinine ratio show dehydration?

BUN/Cr > 20:1: Urea (BUN) is reabsorbed by the kidney; creatinine is not. In dehydration, as water decreases and urea is reabsorbed, the BUN rises. Eventually, the cr will rise, too (if dehydration continues), but it doesn't increase in magnitude as fast as the bun. The bun/cr ration is usually ~10:1...When it's greater than 20:1, this suggests dehydration.

10
How can the bun/creatinine ratio indicate dehydration?

May be helpful: There are many causes of an elevated BUN or elevated creatinine, and the ratio between them must be interpreted in the clinical context of each specific patient. What is commonly referred to as "dehydration" usually causes an increase in the BUN to creatinine ratio, but other significant conditions may cause a similar rise and need to be considered, especially if there is an acute illness involved.

On a metabolic workup, what does a low bun/creatinine ratio reading mean?

Maybe, kidney diseas: In prior answers, explained bun, creatinine, normal ratio, and high ratio. Low ratio means that the BUN is likely low or normal with relation to the creatinine, indicating that there is adequate blood or volume flowing to the kidneys, but the kidneys are impaired or disease in some way. Need a nephrologist - kidney specialist.

How does the bun/creatinine ratio show whether or not you have dehydration?

How does the bun/creatinine ratio show whether or not you have dehydration?

BUN/Creatinine ratio: Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) is the breakdown of protein excreted via kidney. Creatinine is the muscle breakdown product also excreted by the kidney. BUN and creatinine can be measured by lab tests. Usually the BUN / creatinine ratio has to to be over 20 for a patient to be considered dehydrated or in "pre renal kidney failure.

I'm a 69 year old female - my BUN/creatinine ratio is 29. Should I be concerned?

No: If both value are basically normal or just a bit up at your age, you are fine. You can get a ratio like that from eating a big steak. The ratio is useful only if other labs are abnormal and the person is obviously sick.

16

16
Is bun/creatinine ratio 31.7 ok?

How do you FEEL?: Labs mean nothing apart from the person's history and physical. This could be a young girl who recently enjoyed a generous lean chicken dinner.

17

17
What does bun/creatinine ratio of 29 mean?

Depends: The 'normal' ratio is 10:1, this will increase if you become volume depleted. Steroids, high protein diet, gastrointestinal bleeding and renal failure can raise the ratio.

18

18
Bun/creatinine ratio 23 what does this mean?

BUN-creatinine ratio: The BUN (b)-creatinine (c) ratio is the association with b and c. If your b/c was 20, you would have a b of 20 and a c of 1 in your blood. In your case, you could have had a b of 23 and a c of 1.
