Have bone density scan tomo morn. No calcium supplmnts BUT drank 3 glasses almondMilk:135% daily value calcium (fortified w/tricalcium phosphate).Bad?
If too much sugar: It can be bad if the almond milk has sugar added, which it probably does. Drinking sweetened drinks is a fast way to down many, many grams of sugar. Sugar is bad stuff (but a little bit is ok). As for the bone density scan, no worries. Calcium-fortified foods and drinks won't alter one's bone density overnight. ...Read more

Only partly: The dexa scan gives the bone mineral density at the hips, spine and forearm. These scores can predict osteoporosis: 't-score' of less than -2.5 is considered osteoporosis. However, many people suffer osteoporosis fractures despite having better bone densities. So, we also use other factors: age, ethnicity, size, family history, prior fractures, smoking, alcohol, other conditions to predict risks. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Parathyroid hormone at 170pg/ml, vit d at 8ng/ml, calcium serum 10.2 yesterday and 9.1 today, bone mineral density t-score -1.5.. What does this mean?
Bones, Vit D: This is complex, and a precise answer cannot be given on line. Several thoughts: the PTH is high. But this may not reflect anything wrong with the parathyroid glands. Low vit d will result in a reflex increase in pth, and usually the serum ca stays normal, but there is increased bone resorption. Why is the vit d so low? ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

DXA: Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (dxa) is a machine that measures bone mineral density (bmd). Two x-ray beams with different energy levels are aimed at the patient's bones, extemely low radiation dose study. Soft tissues are subtracted from bone. The testing measures the bone density or mineral content of the bones of the spine, pelvis, lower arm, and thigh. Bmd reflects calcium content. ...Read more
Positive, intense uptake on bone scan, lose spinal hardware, bone marrow edema , family history, paternal taking Forteo to strengthen bones. ??ideas?
For one: You probably should remove the hardware. Increased uptake is informing you there is bone activity. You don't state on what phase. This could indicate a fracture or infection.... The doctor should have a clinical suspicion of what he is looking for. If removing the hardware a bone biopsy can be performed if suspecting infection. ...Read more

Yes: If there is physical evidence for thin bones as when a man's bones look thin on x-ray or there is a history of fracture with minor injury or there has been a loss of 1.5 inches of height, or if there are other risks for osteoporosis such as long-term treatment with steroids like Prednisone or hormonal treatment for prostate cancer or hyperparathyroidism, dexa scan absolutely should be done. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
