C Peptide (Overview)

The pancreas is a fish-shaped endocrine gland that is tucked into the stomach and small intestine that has beta cells that secrete insulin; Insulin controls sugar (glucose) metabolism of the entire body. When the Insulin is produced within these cells, it lets off a byproduct, which is a protein molecule called 'c-peptide'. When Insulin is injected directly into body, there's no c peptide produced.

What is c-peptide assay test in diabetes?

What is c-peptide assay test in diabetes?

Measures insulin: The c-peptide is a by-product molecule that the pancreas makes when producing the Insulin hormone. Clinicians use this blood test measure to determine the Insulin production capacity from the pancreas, and to distinguish from Insulin injected as medication (since Insulin rx does not contain c-peptide). The Insulin assay test itself is also less preferable, due to variations in measurements. ...Read more

My 16 mo old has been diagnosis with ketonic hypoglycaemia with no known cause yet. C-peptide levels came today and are high but insulin levels not. Causes?

My 16 mo old has been diagnosis with ketonic hypoglycaemia with no known cause yet. C-peptide levels came today and are high but insulin levels not. Causes?

Doesn't make sense: Elevation in c-peptide with low Insulin doesn't make sense. Ketosis can only happen when Insulin levels are low, though many causes for ketotic hypoglycemia. Most often we see this in the toddler who's been sick and hasn't been eating well. Since Insulin levels were measured, i assume that gh, cortisol were normal. Glycogen storage disease and defects in gluconeogenesis far less common. ...Read more

Why would I need an insulin c-peptide measurement?

Insulin production: C-peptide is usually measured to see how much Insulin a patient is producing, specially when he is already on insulin. Proinsulin is broken off into c-peptide and Insulin in our body, therefore if you have detectable amounts of c-peptide despite receiving Insulin you are still making some insulin, if your c-peptide is low you will need Insulin to metabolize your sugar. ...Read more

What is this test C-peptide done for.will its high number mean stopping glimperide and low mean continuation of it.

It is not for Tx: It is not for treatment. It depends on the circumstances the test is done on, usually it helps to distinguishing type 1 from type 2 diabetes or MODY. It is also used in patient with hypoglycemic episodes to tell if the insulin is exogenous or endogenous. Its used also for other things, but mainly for diagnosis not treatment. But once the diagnosis is changed, the Tx will also change. ...Read more

How can the measurement of a blood c peptide level help to determine the type of diabetes?

How can the measurement of a blood c peptide level help to determine the type of diabetes?

Helps determine type: A c-peptide level is low in patients with type 1 dm because it is part of the Insulin hormone and type 1 diabetics lack insulin. It is usually high or normal in type 2 diabetics. ...Read more

I don't have diabetes however my c-peptide test was high. I have been sick for over 1 year now. Can a vipoma cause this?

Not a key finding: Vipomas by producing vasoactive intestional peptide (vip) can increase glycogenolysis from the liver which increases a person's blood sugar. An increased blood sugar would stimulate more Insulin secretion from the pancreas which would increase the serum c-peptide level. There are much more common reasons for an elevated c-peptide level, you should discuss this with your dr. If you are worried. ...Read more

Insulin and c peptide Levels were good . 2 hr ogtt level 320 with a fasting of 60. 5 hours later level 60? What could be going on. I'm 5'3" 119 pounds

Diabetes possible: If you have not had a hemoglobin A1c done, I would get one done. If it is higher than 6.4%, then you have diabetes. Insulin levels are rarely clinically useful. Another test that can be helpful is a GAD (glutamic acid decarboxylase) antibody test. ...Read more

I had borderline high C-peptide. By removing sugar from diet it lowered significantly. Approximately how many grams of sugar i can consume per day to maintain the lowered level of c-peptide?

Extra insulin: The C-Peptide tells you that you are making insulin from your pancreas. what you really want to look at is if you have an elevated Hemoglobin A-C which helps to determine if you have Diabetes or Insulin Resistance. You need to restrict the simple sugar that you consume. ...Read more

If my c peptide was 1.8 could I have type 1 diabetes?

If my c peptide was 1.8 could I have type 1 diabetes?

Can't interpret: You can't interpret a random c-peptide level without checking a concomitant blood sugar and Insulin level. If you have untreated type 1 dm you should have symptoms of frequent urination and a lot of thirst. Your blood sugars would be high and so would a hba1c. Insulin levels would be low with type 1. Gad-65 antibodies may or may not be positive. Without symptoms, unlikely to have type 1. ...Read more
