C Diff How Long Does It Last
Stool sample c. Diff positive. How long does it last? How to know when it's gone. Will Flagyl alone cure it? Can I go to work? Are more tests needed?
Depends: In most cases, c diff is treated with 2 weeks of antibiotics. This is effective around 85% of the time, but 15% can "relapse" after their antibiotics. This requires more antibiotics. After that, an even higher % will have a 2nd relapse. Treatment is with even more antibiotics. And so on. Some patients have had relapsing diff for years! We can often cure them with a stool transplant. ...Read more
Long if not treated: C. Difficile can cause a prolonged severe colitis if it is not treated. If treated it usually starts to improve 3-4 days into the 10-14 day treatment course. Relapses occur in 25% of cases. These relapses require re-treatment and can continue to recur requiring prolonged pulse/taper vancomycin treatment and even fecal transplant therapy for cure. ...Read more

Good question: Hard to say. We don't routinely test patients with c diff to confirm eradication after treatment, because they can still be asymptomatic carriers (test positive but feeling well). So are they contagious? Probably not. The vast majority of people exposed to someone with prior c diff don't get sick. But exposure to active c diff could lead to colonization, or even infection if on antibiotics. ...Read more
Depends: If you are intimate with the individual who has had c. Difficile colitis they may still be a stool carrier and have the potential to give it to you. If this is casual contact, transmission is not likely once the diarrhea has stopped. But continue washing hands and taking routine sanitary precautions. ...Read more

Also take culturelle, a probiotic proven to help c. Diff. Rest ; reduce stress.See comment:. ...Read more

CDI sooner or later: We're constantly in contact w/bacteria like c. Diff. We 'eat' the spore or rarely the vegitative (actively growing) bacteria. Stomach acid kills veg form. The spore passes to bowel & hangs out (>1 mo). It can pass out or if conditions are right (normal flora disrupted) due to antibiotics, immunedefic, chronic illnesses, chemo, or bad luck it sprouts to veg form & makes toxins which make us ill. ...Read more
