Burping issues: Involuntary belching after a meal is normal, caused by release of swallowed gas after distension of the stomach with food. Magenblase syndrome is postprandial epigastric fullness & bloating, relieved by belching. Aerophagia (accumulation of gas due to air swallowing) is common with anxiety, hypersalivation from gum chewing, smoking, drinking, oral irritation. In some, belching can become habitual. ...Read more

You need a full exam labs amylase/lipase H pylori titers/stool for HPYLORI x 3. Hi consult with endoscopy and esophageal mammometry to check for spasm. Also biopsies for HPYLORI. Mid back pain: Esophagitis may cause pain in the chest and duodenal ulcer if located in the posterior wall may cause backpain, as the pain is associated with swallowing points towards the esophagus, burping may be from swallowing excess air, better to have yourself checked out ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
3 day old. While he sleeps he occasionaly swallows air over and over like hes gearing up for a huge burp. He then burps, pukes, gags, gasps etc. :( wtf?
Any 3 DAY old: who is vomiting needs to be seen. It may be nothing, but at this stage you don't even know for sure that his "tubes" are all working, and it would be a tragedy if he were to aspirate while sleeping on his back. At least call the pediatrician and discuss. Good luck! ...Read more
I swallow a lot of air. So unable to sleep. Have to exercise to burp out the air. Has been chronic (20yrs). No one has been able help me.. Pls help.
What has been done?: Unfortunately, your problem is not uncommon and the solution is not always clear. Often "swallowing" air is a behavioral issue which needs psychological attention and training to stop from doing what may be the equivalent of a MOTOR TIC...a very annoying and hard to stop TIC. Other times it could be a FISTULA (communication) between the esophagus and windpipe. Tests needs to be done. ...Read more
I often feel as though I almost vomited but I never feel sick when it occurs, happens after burping or swallowing food, could it b functional problem?
Reflux likely: If it always occurs after eating /drinking or with burping this is gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. Your physician can treat you for this with medication and with diet change. I advise changing to a low acid diet and eating small meals. If this does not improve after a 6-8 week dietary change then further investigation may be needed. ...Read more
May get "heartburn": The air has either passed, without notice, or remains in your stomach. Either way, it will come back out, be displaced out by other new fluids, or dissolve. Either way, it shouldn't be dangerous. It can cause nausea, vomiting, or "heartburn" however, so purposefully swallowing air is generally not advised. ...Read more
Why does my chest and thoart hurt when I try to eat, drink, and swallow? Can't even burp sometimes
Swallowing trouble?: Swallowing trouble can reflect problems when moving food from mouth to upper esophagus (tranfer dysphagia) or when moving food down the esophagus (transit dysphagia). Partial obstruction of esophagus may "hang-up" dry solid foods but typically allow liquids to pass. Motility disorders may "hang-up" both solids as well as liquids. Painful swallowing is especially concerning. Find & treat cause. ...Read more
Feels like food is stuck on my chest for a few hours, no problem swallowing liquids. Have the urge to force myself to burp?
Hi: If liquids pass you probably do not have a blockage as they would come back up too. You might have irritated your lower esophagus. Liquid antacids might be the best to try at first and dose four times a day. You might need to treat up to two weeks and Zantac (ranitidine) OTC would be easier. If your symptoms have been there longer then you need to seek further evaluation and treatment and possibly a scope. ...Read more

Swallowing problems: Give a good history to your Dr and let team examine. Then I would ask your Dr and team what they think is going on, what tests need to be done and what treatment do they recommend . Describe in great detail what happens and then ask them what the problem is and what you should do about it. I note daytime sleepiness and would ask about testing for obstructive sleep apnea. ...Read more
