No short answer: A number of possibillities, if he does much lifting he may be straining the muscles. He may have a prostate infection (that's often back pain though). He could have diverticulosis (pockets in the intestine) and they may get obstructed and/or infected at times (more often left side). Would suggest making sure you get the same amount of sleep every night, meaning that if you have to wake up early you compensate by going to sleep earlier. Possible stress?: When you say that your doctors do not see anything does that mean they have done endoscopies for the stomach and do not see ulcers? Have they done barium swallow's and not seen anything abnormal in the esophagus or elsewhere in the G.I. tract? Is there are no hiatal hernia on imaging exams or anything else? I would follow up closely with your doctor about getting treatment as soon as possible assuming your doctor agrees with the diagnosis. Did you have the surgery as open procedure, or laparoscopic.?
Make sure that you follow your surgeon instructions.
Apply heat pad and take more ibuprofen than narcotic, and make sure that your bowels are soft and you are going every day.
