Is there a lower cost, long term over-the-counter mouth guard that can be worn at night to prevent teeth grinding? Would it prevent future TMJ issues?
Night guards do not prevent grinding. Basically they protect teeth from being damaged.
Over the counter mouthguards are too thick and not bite-balanced, so they can increase grinding, clenching, and TMJ dysfunction.
A custom made nightguard can help with TMJ from grinding, but not from clenching.
