Impossible to say: If you had blood tests because of these symptoms, I would hope that they also did tests for pancreatic damage, particularly a lipase (or an older test, amylase). Are you still drinking, despite the pain? If so, I would be very concerned. Easiest way to find if they are related is to stop and see what happens. It can be a case of diverticulitis which might need a barium enema or some other tests. It can even be a hernia which may also need more tests and thorough exam to rule out. However, if grandfather is in his seventies and about 160-170 pounds, his kidney function is near 50% or so. In his age group, his kidney function should be near 70% or so.
