Why can't I get wellbutrin (bupropion) in the uk for depression? Is it that dangerous? My gp will only prescribe zyban for quiting smoking and only for 9 weeks!

Not dangerous: I do not know why bupropion is not approved in the uk, except zyban for smoking cessation. It is no more dangerous (and many would say far less) than the ssri and snri drugs (effexor, prozac, paxil, (paroxetine) zoloft etc etc). It is one of the few antidepressants not associated with weight gain or sexual dysfunction, and the rate of seizures, of concern, is really low. See if doc will order from us/canada... ...Read more

Is name brand wellbutrin XL more effective than generic (bupropion)? Taking generic but too many side effects and little effect on mood after 4 weeks.

Is name brand wellbutrin XL more effective than generic (bupropion)? Taking generic but too many side effects and little effect on mood after 4 weeks.

For some, yes: For all medicines sold in the us, the fda requires that the active ingredient in wellbutrin (bupropion) be equally present in brand name and generic products. However, each generic manufacturer might use different fillers or dyes in its formulation. Pharmacies buy generics in quantity, and might change suppliers from month to month. Some (not all) patients notice differences in their results. ...Read more

Is it safe to take bupropion sr (300 mg) daily and pristiq (desvenlafaxine) (50mg) daily together? Can this combo cause serotonin syndrome?

Is there gained risk of seizures from bupropion (150) when using with escitalopram (5mg) and interferons (for multiple sclerosis)? I taking all of them.

Is there gained risk of seizures from bupropion (150) when using with escitalopram (5mg) and interferons (for multiple sclerosis)? I taking all of them.

THEORETICAL: Risk of seizure activity is likely minimal, as your dosing is certainly not excessive. If you do have MS, risk of seizure activity is roughly about 6-7%, and this should NOT be accentuated by your medications. As an aside, there is likely no real risk of seizure activity from an interferon, but have mainly phased out in favor of newer oral agents. Check your calcium and vitamin D levels. ...Read more

How long does it take to feel the effects of Wellbutrin (bupropion)? I've been on it for 5 weeks and still feeling down.

4-6 Weeks: Bupropion is an antidepressant that works primarily by increasing dopamine. If you have had absolutely no improvement in your depression, you may be on too low of a dose, or this may just be a medication that doesn't work for you. Also make sure you have the right diagnosis. Do NOT discontinue this without consulting your psychiatrist, but I would bring this up with him/her. ...Read more
