My BUN result is 21, and BUN/CREATININE ratio is 29. I have struggled with Vit D and B12 deficiencies in the past. Should I be concerned?

While your BUN: (blood urea nitrogen) is slightly high (usual normal is up to 20), your BUN/creatinine ratio is higher at 29 (usual normal is also up to 20). An increased ratio may be due to a condition that causes a decrease in the flow of blood to the kidneys such as dehydration or congestive heart failure. Vitamin D or B12 levels should not impact this. Discuss with the doctor who ordered these tests for you. ...Read more

Two questions. Will estrogen and other contraceptives affect the serum ACTH test? And will oral hypoglycemics affect BUN results?

Two questions. Will estrogen and other contraceptives affect the serum ACTH test? And will oral hypoglycemics affect BUN results?

Estrogen: In small amounts should not affect ACTH but theoretically, estrogen increases cortisol binding protein needing a little extra ACTH to compensate for the temporary decrease in free cortisol. Second question, they do not but we should be careful because renal imsufficiency makes them stronger ...Read more

Is a Potassium Blood test result of 5.3 mmol/L and a BUN result of 19mg/dL indicate anything, if all other CBC and CMP results are in range?

Check next year: The high potassium may simply be due to a little hemolysis during drawing or transportation. If you feel well otherwise, it's your physician's call whether to repeat it or just text next year. ...Read more

High bun and bun/creatinine ratio results. What does this mean?

High bun and bun/creatinine ratio results. What does this mean?

Dehydration: Is most common cause of high BUN with normal creatinine (therefore high ratio). Other causes can be high protein load in the diet, muscle injury or muscle breakdown (bun is formed by the breakdown of proteins). Whether to worry depends on how high the BUN is, and the circumstances when the test was drawn. Talk to the doctor who ordered the test for personalized interpretation. ...Read more

High bun and bun/creatinine ratio results so bad kidneys?

Most of time: Generally high BUN and creatinine go hand in hand in bad kidneys (chronic kidney disease)., and bun/creat ratio is 10-15 to 1, however if ratio >20 may indicate superimposed second cause like dehydration or bleeding in gut. ...Read more

Test results! Bun=6 /hematocrit=34/hct ic =35.1. Is these normal results? The paper I was given shows these are below normal but dr said they were ok

What's "normal"?: Reference ranges are set so that several percent of healthy folks fall outside on either end. "normal" doesn't necessarily mean "healthy" in any case. Especially, low BUN in a person who looks and feels well never means anything. Your physician gave you good advice. ...Read more

My lab test results says. Bun/ creatinine ratio results 28, units h, reference interval lab 8-20. Can someone please tell me what this means.

What are the results: Of BUN and creatinine? Ratios often distort the meaning of raw values. All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that one needs to know the actual values to provide an opinion. ...Read more

High Urine P/C: Your u protein- creat ratio means you are spilling protein (p) in your urine. You now have good kidney function. See a physician to get a 24 hour urine for a creatinine clearance and protein to quantify the amount of p you have. You will need a drug like ramipril-an ace-inhibitor, or benicar, (olmesartan) an angiotensin receptor blocker to reduce the p you have. If this done, you will protect your kidneys. ...Read more

Got my results. I have high mcv, mpv and bun. What's going on with me?

This means nothing: If you feel well and this is routine labs & values not way off, you're simply curious & probably fine. Your elevated BUN might reflect nothing more than a taste for protein in your diet. Mpv (mean platelet volume) seldom means anything unless a person is obviously sick. A slightly elevated mean corpuscular volume can be due to anything from normal-for-you to a bit too much booze. Thyroid labs ok? ...Read more

Which etiology results in an elevated bun level with a normal serum creatinine level?

Which etiology results in an elevated bun level with a normal serum creatinine level?

Multiple causes: BUN is a breakdown of ingested protein, but becomes elevated compared to creatine, in cases of increased catabolism (breakdown). Such things as a high protein diet, use of some steroids, some infections, or volume depletion may commonly raise BUN levels. In a hospital setting, tube feeding, tpn, GI bleeding, infections, decreased flow to the kidneys, and use of steroids are frequent contributors. ...Read more

Creatinine serum 1.5 mg/dl gfr 47-nb bun test 27 how bad is this. Can there be ways to improve on these results. Thank you?

Big picture: Everybody's kidney function declines some with age. I'm good with your BUN especially if you eat a lot of protein. And if you're a mature athlete, this may even be fine; creatinine varies with a man's muscularity. When I was lifting weights daily in my early thirties, my creatinine run 1.5 to 1.6 -- perfectly healthy. ...Read more

African-American, BUN 16, Creat 1.16. GFR 52. Do I use the MDRD calculator/ multiply results by1.210? What is the normal level GFR for AfA?

Norm is >60 mL/min: GFR, glomerular filtration rate, measures creatinine, a waste product in the blood that comes from muscle activity. The kidneys normally remove creatinine from the blood. As kidney function slows down, creatinine level goes up. African Americans tend to have more muscle mass than other ethnicities, so the calculation of GFR is adjusted. Normal GFR is 60 mL/min or greater. Hope that helps ...Read more

What does it mean if I have low MCV, MCH and MCHC (77, 23.9, 30.9)? All other platelet results were normal. BUN is 8 (range was 6-20.).

Can't diagnose: It's your physician's decision whether to screen you for iron deficiency at this time. You know that you're describing red cell indices, not platelet problems. It's a mistake to look at any set of labs apart from the history and physical, and if there are other health issues, they must be understood in context. ...Read more

Bun, bun/crea high & abnormal crystals. Six months ago same thing. Severe lower back pain. Any relation and can these results be normal for some?

Whoa: Lab testing is tricky. I probably raised my BUN and BUN/creatinine level by just eating a nice, big steak. If your creatinine is okay, kidney disease probably isn't the focus. Most folks have one or another sort of crystal in urine -- it's been cooled, after all, and truly "abnormal" crystals are rare. If they're struvite, it's a problem -- kidney stone? Your physician's already considered. Ask. ...Read more

Dr wants me to do Creatnine/GFR and BUN but he wants me to drink 1 litter water b4 test. Why the water? Can water mask abnormal results 4 early CKD?

Best guess...: When dehydrated, blood tests can suggest a degree of kidney failure. One clue that dehydration may be contributing to the abnormal tests is a high BUN/Cr ratio. Drinking plenty of water before the next test will clarify the issue rather than confuse it. It is likely that follow-up tests will be done to be sure that your kidney function is stable. It is important to follow pre-test instructions. ...Read more

I just got my blood/urine test results. I asked for a hard copy for myself. It states that BUN under Comp. Metabolic Panel (14) is low. ..?

Low BUN: BUN measures both protein intake and renal function (RF). Creatinine (C) is a better measurement of and is dependent on the person's sex, age, and race. If your C was normal you have nothing to worry about. A low BUN can be seen in people eating a low protein diet. You should ask the physician who ordered the blood test for you for the P's opinion for a more meaningful answer. ...Read more

Do these lab results mean I have a bleeding issue/thin blood? Mpv 9.0 fl l, bun 7mg/dl l, bun/creat ratio 8 l, alb/glob 0.9 l. L=low. Can u translate?

Inconclusive: For the most part, the tests that you list are important in the context of what other numbers are. Mpv is a measure of the plumpness of your platelets, and platelets are important for blood clotting. But, the actual number of platelets (should be >150) is usually more important for bleeding issues. If that number is fine, then this slightly low mpv level could just represent a mild viral infection. ...Read more

See your clinician: There may be nothing "wrong" with you. Note that no test is perfectly accurate. Also, if you're at very low risk for a disease, an abnormal result is less likely to be true. You need to sit down with a clinician to review your tests in light of your overall personal & family medical history, physical findings, & health goals. Next steps include further tests, & watch & wait. Hope that helps. ...Read more

Need units of: Measure. All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, it would have been useful to know the units of measure of BUN and creatinine. Urine creatitnine by itself is not a useful test.
