Is a low BUN/Creatinine ratio (8.3) something to worry about if BUN is at 8 mg/dL and Creatinine is at 0.96 mg/dL, both within the normal range?

No need to worry: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, your result are in the normal range.

My 6 year old son has a high glucose/serum 106, bun level 22, bun/creatinine ratio 43, triglycerides 84, is this normal to be alittle high in range?

Here are some...: You should refer your questions & concerns to his pediatrician who possesses more of his pertinent information than anyone online. Besides it is useful to always correlate the lab findings with individual clinical profile and compare with prior tests serially. To make a question easy to answer, always stress the specifics & relevance with sequence of events in the question. Best wish...

Is a BUN/CREATININE Ratio of 29 normal in a 38 yr old woman?

Is a BUN/CREATININE Ratio of 29 normal in a 38 yr old woman?

No worries: If your BUN and creatinine are both normal, the ratio has little significance. It may reflect mild dehydration. Drink more water.

Hi my 4y son has BUN 12, Creatinine 0.26 which is normal however his BUN/Creatinine Ratio is 46. Why would it be elevated?

Hi my 4y son has BUN 12, Creatinine 0.26 which is normal however his BUN/Creatinine Ratio is 46. Why would it be elevated?

Has no importance: The value of this ratio does not become important when the creatinine level is so low (but normal) in early childhood. It is only when the body mass has matured and the creatinine level rises that it can have any significance. Please do not freak over pre-printed lab reports generated by a computer. It is truly not an issue.

My lab results were normal for bun and creatinine however bun/creatinine ratio was high?

Possibly Dehydration: Thank goodness, your kidney function is normal. But any increase bun/creatinine ratio, typically > 20 could mean that you are dehydrated.

Should I be concerned of a low BUN/Creatinine Ratio on blood work? Is 8 still normal? BUN/Creatinine Ratio 8 LOW Reference 10-22

Okay: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, if your creatinine is under 1.2, you are fine.

2 y.o female has normal bun (8mg/dl)&creatinine (0.23mg/dl) but BUN/creatinine ratio is abnormal at 35. Why is this? Fasting blood glucose is also 134.

Bun and creatinine: Do not worry about ratio of bun/cr. Bun is affected by many factors, hydration status, protein intake, muscle mass, whether on any hormone supplement. In this case, the creatine is quite low which is not necessarily a problem. Glucose can normally be higher in young children, so not a problem. A pediatrician or endocrinologist can tell you more if fasting glucose of 134 in a 2 yr old is a problem?

I had a partial nephrectomy in 2008. My lab results were normal for bun and creatinine however bun/creatinine ratio was high (25). Should I be concern?

No: Many times the ratio is high but relative to the individual values a low normal creatinine and a high normal BUN will show an abnormal ration but would be normal individual numbers. The benefit ais thta it makes one look at the numbers more carefully but is not used for a diagnosis.

My bun/creatinine ratio is low and my egfr non african american is low (57.4) the urine itself was normal but dark and cloudy. What's going on?

My bun/creatinine ratio is low and my egfr non african american is low (57.4) the urine itself was normal but dark and cloudy. What's going on?

I'm not worried: This isn't science. The adjustment for race is there "because black people are more muscular than white people". BUN/creatinine ratio being low is never a problem if you feel even semi-well. Dr. F. has given you good advice. Just keep an eye on this and if your actual creatinine is up well above reference range for a time, get evaluated.

I had bloodwork done on tuesday that came back with a bun/creatinine ratio of 23. All other tests were normal. On wednesday night I had a kidney stone attack. Would that have raised my ratio?

Dehydration: Classically an increased BUN/Creat ratio reflects dehyration, which may also go along with kidney stones. Drinking water as a habit may help. Also always try to catch stones in urine for analysis.

My micoalbumin is 555 but my Bun/Creatinine ratio is normal and my Serum Albumin is normal. I am diabetic. What does 555 mean? Is it kidney failure?

My micoalbumin is 555 but my Bun/Creatinine ratio is normal and my Serum Albumin is normal. I am diabetic. What does 555 mean? Is it kidney failure?

Diabetic nephropathy: B"sd kidney failure is marked by elevation of creatinine. Microalbumin is a sensitive test for early kidney changes seen in diabetes and hypertension. Unless very high, standard albumin will be normal. Fatty liver is of concern but not directly related. To prevent progression of kidney disease 1. control of diabetes 2. blood pressure control 3. ACE or ARB agent. Glad to discuss

Monocytes 15%; bun/creatinine ratio 24; esterase (abnormal); microalbumin 77.9; vitamin d 24.8. What does this mean with remaining results all normal?

Nothing alone: Percentages of white cells are totally uninformative in the absence of absolute counts. Your bun/creatinine ratio may be nothing more than your having just eaten a steak dinner. A trace of Albumin in a non-diabetic's urine usually means nothing. I need the units for the vitamin d -- what did your physician say? Lab ranges are set so that almost everybody has a few flags. What did your doctor say?

Is bun/creatinine ratio 31.7 ok?

How do you FEEL?: Labs mean nothing apart from the person's history and physical. This could be a young girl who recently enjoyed a generous lean chicken dinner.

Meaning of bun/creatinine ratio?

Meaning of bun/creatinine ratio?

Defines kidney prob: Bun=blood urea nitrogen, byproduct of proteins ingested, if rise to high levels due to kidney problem, can cause toxic affects on the body. Creatinine= measurement of renal function. Normal bun/cr ratio about 10. The higher that ratio, the more likely it is not intrinsic kidney disease per se, but reduction in blood flow or volume to kidney, like when on strong diuretic-prerenal-reversible.

16

16
What causes elevated bun/creatinine ratio?

Decrease in flow.: Bun=blood urea nitrogen, byproduct of proteins ingested, if rise to high levels due to kidney problem, can cause toxic affects on the body. Creatinine= measurement of renal function. Normal bun/cr ratio about 10. The higher that ratio, the more likely it is not intrinsic kidney disease per se, but reduction in blood flow or volume to kidney, like when on strong diuretic-prerenal-reversible.

17

17
What does bun/creatinine ratio of 29 mean?

Depends: The 'normal' ratio is 10:1, this will increase if you become volume depleted. Steroids, high protein diet, gastrointestinal bleeding and renal failure can raise the ratio.

18

18
What causes elevated bun/creatinine ratio?

What causes elevated bun/creatinine ratio?

Many causes: Blood tests called BUN (blood urea nitrogen) and cr (creatinine) are often checked to help evaluate kidney function. The normal bun/cr ration is about 10:1 to 15:1. Some of the more common causes of an elevated bun/cr ratio are: dehydration, GI bleeding, increased protein intake, small amount of muscle mass, increased muscle breakdown.

19

19
Bun/creatinine ratio 23 what does this mean?

BUN-creatinine ratio: The BUN (b)-creatinine (c) ratio is the association with b and c. If your b/c was 20, you would have a b of 20 and a c of 1 in your blood. In your case, you could have had a b of 23 and a c of 1.
