Even though it didn't seem very hard, unless you are on blood thinners or know that you bleed very freely, you should probably be examined and have an x-ray. Unlikely to be a: Fracture based on the description you gave. A fracture will give you significantly worse symptoms than just tenderness. There is a condition called erythema nodosum that can occur for many reasons and is characterized by red knots on the shin.
