Slipped Disc (Definition)

The disks are protective shock-absorbing pads between the bones of the spine (vertebrae). The disks of the spine are also referred to as intervertebral disks. Although they do not actually "slip, " a disk may move, split, or rupture. This can cause the disk cartilage and nearby tissue to fail (herniate), allowing the inner gel portion of the disk to escape ...Read more

What causes bulging or herniated disc?

What causes bulging or herniated disc?

Aging, injury: Disc bulges are normal variants & not an issue that should cause a problem. This occurs with disc loading as well. A disc herniation is an actual disruption of the disc's coating layers allowing disc material to move out of a normal position. This is a more frequent finding as we age as the disc degenerates which is accelerated by obesity & smoking. Overloading a disc's weight capacity=herniation. ...Read more

What are the chances of a bulging disc becoming a herniated disc?

What are the chances of a bulging disc becoming a herniated disc?

Possible!: Discs undergo changes with age, like car tire wears with time. Disc degenerative start with dehydration of the nucleus pulposus which results in low disc turgor. Hence the disc height decreases, and "bulges" -- like tire with low pressure. This leads to more stress on the annulus covering which then tear, and disc can then herniate from tear. Like driving on a flat tire, exposes the inner wires. ...Read more

If cortisone shots are not working, physical therapy, chiropractic care, back bracing, traction and neuropathic pain medicine such as Neurontin (gabapentin) may help reduce the pain. If these fail or there is significant weakness then surgery is indicated. See the neurosurgeon ...Read more

Cost benefits?: There have been no clinical trials of laser surgery versus standard surgery. My gp says a bulging disc and a herniated disc is the same thing but the dr. At the hospital said they are different. Who is right?

Not exactly same...: Technically a herniated disc is one that has actually ruptured the supporting ring of tissue whereas a bulging disc has not yet reached that point. Both can cause precisely the same symptoms and follow a very similar course. A bulging disc may be only a moment away from a frank herniation so I am not sure the difference is much more than academic. ...Read more

MRI: Mri is a study that evaluates the anatomy of the body. Referring do a disc, I am assuming a herniated disc. If the disc has repaired and is no longer herniated, this will show one follow-up mri.

Are you suppose to have a cortisone shot if you have a bulging or herniated disc? When does a doctor preform a meg what would be the reason

SUPPOSED to have? No: In my opinion, cortisone shots offer limited relief to most people & the procedure often has to be repeated more than what is advertised due wearing off effects. Having said that, some people relate a lot of benefit & they're willing to live with the downsides. But just remember that the root cause of the pain is not being treated therefore, at some point you will always come back to square 1. ...Read more
