It is a body tissue that has the ability to contract. It shortens and generates force. It relaxes and returns to its original length. Muscles move joints, stabilize the body, move air and food through the organs, act as valves for bladder, bowel and other organs. They control movement of the eyes. They help us express ourselves by changing the shape of our ...Read more
Muscle Hypertrophy: First you can build muscle at any age! Dr. Walter frontera has demonstrated this even in 80-90 year olds. If you want bulk like a body builder you must do multiple sets of 8-12 reps of a medium weight with little rest to hypertrophy type 1 fibers (endurance). If you want power you should do high weights with low reps and 2-3 minutes rest. Strength is somewhere in between. Variable is essential. ...Read more

Double the time: I agree with the original answer. The concern is not true atrophy but the loss of power and performance. The typical rule is it takes twice as long to get back to where you were as the duration of the absence. So if you missed 2 weeks, expect a 4 week interval of hard work to get back to where you were. ...Read more
Hi, Due to anxiety problem, can your muscle be very tensed? My chest muscle and arm also my back muscle is very tensed..
Yes: Muscle tension is one of the most common symptoms of anxiety. Some things that can help this in the short-term are regular exercise, healthy diet, a daily meditation practice, progressive muscle relaxation, breathing slowly and softly (extend the out-breaths). Here's an article I wrote about the general approach to reducing anxiety: http://davidgodot. Com/relaxation-stress-management/ ...Read more

Arm & trunk moves: Your arms don't stop at your shirt's shoulder seams. Big muscles connect your arm and trunk: pectorals in front, latissimus dorsi to the small of your back and trapezius to your mid-back. Rotator cuff muscles and deltoids cap your shoulders. Shoulder blade stabilizers and neck mobilizers also play a part. Joint restrictions, too. Tightness in any can bind your arm. ...Read more

Yes in my opinion: I think it is a great idea to alternate muscle groups in the course of a fitness program. The soreness is likely attributable to anaerobic metabolism or Lactic Acid buildup. Have pain in the front right chest muscle that shoots down back of arm to top of forearm to fingers. Help?
Pinched nerve: Because patients having cardiac problems can have these symptoms, you should have this ruled out. But the most common cause is an irritation of a nerve in the neck by a bone spur or herniation that can cause pain or numbness that runs down the arm into the hand. An MRI can usually show the cause of the problem if it does not resolve. Thank you for the question. ...Read more

On and off pain on the left side of my chest. Some arm pain where my arm muscle is. Had an EKG done about a month ago. Wouldn't that have shown??
Probably not: An ECG is a representation of the electrical activity through the heart. If someone has had a normal ECG several weeks ago, and now has symptoms, most causes may not have been on the earlier ECG. It may be helpful to get an ECG now when you are having symptoms and compare it to the older ECG. ...Read more
How much weight per arm should I lift (what weight is normal) in order to train my chest, biceps, and similar muscles. I am sport active and in shape.
Start with a weight:
You can easily and safely lift and perform that lift at least 10 times (repetitions) and then repeat at least 1 time again (a set).
That would mean lifting the same weight 20 times (2 sets of 10 reps each).
For larger muscles, do heavier weights fewer reps (generally) and for more strength, do slightly less weight, but more reps (15-20 per set) and 3 or more sets. ...Read more

Weak: Weak pulse and bulging veins in one limb could indicate a serious problem with the blood vessels in that region. Such problems, which include something called arterial dissection and something called venous thrombosis, could threaten the limb or your life. These sort of symptoms should be evaluated right away. Problems with the large arteries and veins in the neck or in a limb are usually first tested with an ultrasound, using a probe placed on the skin. Would breaking the nerve across the chest lead to losing muscle mass in the upper arms? Would the same be true for the nerves and muscles down front?
Unlikely.: The nerves that supply the arms run through the brachial plexus, a network of nerves that run from the neck spinal cord through the axilla (near pit of the arm). If these were severed, loss of function and atrophy of the arm muscles would occur. No nerves that supply the arm run on the front of the chest. This area only has nerves to the skin, & nerve damage would result in numbness in the skin. ...Read more
