Is gluten free pasta ( maize starch, soy flour, potato starch and rice starch)with about 40 gm carbohydrates good for cholesterol ?

Is gluten free pasta ( maize starch, soy flour, potato starch and rice starch)with about 40 gm carbohydrates good for cholesterol ?

Does not matter: Since 90% of the cholesterol is produced by the body regardless of your diet, the above would not noticeably affect your cholesterol level. Do note that too much carb may not be good for your health. I don't believe extreme diet does anyone any good. Just eat anything in moderation and exercise at least 3 hrs a week will likely keep you in better shape. ...Read more

What is the glycemic index and glycemic load of cheetos snacks?

Glycemic index: Glycemic index is an estimate of how much a food will raise your blood sugar after you eat it. Each unit = 1 gram of glucose -- it measures carbohydrate content. If it's greater than 20, it's considered high. For cheetos, the number is 6, but there's not much nutritional value in them either. You can look it up yourself at: http://nutritiondata.Self.Com/facts/custom/1719926/2. ...Read more

Ingredients: potato powder, potato starch, modified food starch, vegetable oil. Is it healthy?

Ingredients: potato powder, potato starch, modified food starch, vegetable oil. Is it healthy?

REALLY UNHEALTHY!!!: This is recipe for disaster. Potatoes are in the environmental working group's dirty dozen foods-they're high in pesticides if not organic & are readily converted to sugar so raise blood sugar, causing weight gain & increased risk of diabetes. Generic "vegetable oil" is almost certainly corn, soy or canola which are all gmo if not organic & very toxic, fried potatoes have carcinogenic acrylamides. ...Read more

Does blending food raise its glycemic index ?

Does blending food raise its glycemic index
?

Not really: If you blend foods and keep the fiber in them- the glycemic index should remain the same. The stomach churns the food almost as well. Many people who blend foods, strain them and take out the fiber, the pulp, the seeds. These sources of fiber when removed, would increase the glycemic index and glycemic load delivered to the body. ...Read more

Why does white bread have a higher GI (glycemic index) than whole grain bread?

Definition: The Glycemic Index (GI) is a relative ranking of carbohydrate in foods according to how they affect blood glucose levels. Carbohydrates with a low GI value (55 or less) are more slowly digested, absorbed and metabolized and cause a lower and slower rise in blood glucose and, therefore insulin levels.? Are low carb diets healthier than diets with whole grains, vegetables, fruit and lean proteins?

Are low carb diets healthier than diets with whole grains, vegetables, fruit and lean proteins?

Not necessarily: There is no single diet that is best for everyone. I believe it is wise to minimize sugars and simple starches, but i believe a diet with whole grains, vegetables, fruit and low-fat proteins is healthier than a strict low carb diet (which is relatively high in fat and protein). See http://drrandybaker.Com/2013/01/20/diet-and-health/ for my essay on the pros and cons of various diets. ...Read more

Do gluten free foods increase your blood glycemic index?

Do gluten free foods increase your blood glycemic index?

Glycemic index: A high glycemic index means a food turns into sugar readily in your body. Foods containing gluten are grains, and are carbohydrates, so they have a high glycemic index. Gluten free foods can be either high or low depending on their carbohydrate content. Sugar is gluten free but has the highest glycemic index. Meat is gluten free but has a low glycemic index. On a low carb diet, is whole grain crackers better than eating bread?

On a low carb diet, is whole grain crackers better than eating bread?

It depends: Whichever one has the least amount of carbs is probably best; if you choose bread then choose whole grain bread. Consider whole grain crackers that also have seeds as those will be lower in carbs (such as mary's gone crackers). In following a low carb diet you don't need to completely avoid grains but keep the amount of grains relatively low; whole gluten-free grains are relatively healthy. ...Read more
