Ankle sprain: Normal healing of a sprained ankle takes several weeks (on average). If its a chronically sprained ankle with constant pain and instability, it will take longer than a "normal" sprain. Yes, a sprain can get worse. Usually 3-4 weeks of rest, icing, antiinflammatory meds (like advil (ibuprofen) or motrin), bracing or compressing wraps, with or without physical therapy should be normal. Likely normal : It can take a few weeks before the swelling and bruising subside. The burning sensation is likely from local nerves being under pressure from the excess blood and swelling in and around the ankle joint. This should also subside as the other symptoms do. Yes: The ankle will swell for quite some time. Ice several times daily, elevate the extremity and if you can safely take it, ibuprofen will help. Once you can begin range of motion this should help with swelling as well. If you are not in one I would recommend a pneumatic cam walker and ask your physician for consult for physical therapy. I would not : Walk on it if possible....(I.e crutches).
Fractures are usually evident on xrays or MRI if a stress fracture.
It sucks when you get differing opinoins as your hoping to be given expert advice and you yourself are not expected to be able to read an xray or MRI....
So sorry about that. How different is the treatment plan between the two? Since your in pain, err on the side of caution.. ...Read more
