Severe ankle sprain 8 days ago. Still can't walk, top of foot numb, bruising severe. How long should take to heal? Can i damage further trying to walk
Ankle sprain: Normal healing of a sprained ankle takes several weeks (on average). If its a chronically sprained ankle with constant pain and instability, it will take longer than a "normal" sprain. Yes, a sprain can get worse. Usually 3-4 weeks of rest, icing, antiinflammatory meds (like advil (ibuprofen) or motrin), bracing or compressing wraps, with or without physical therapy should be normal. Hope that helps! ...Read more

Why is the side of my calf bruising up after ankle sprain? I have taken a 90min flight the day after injury. Is this DVT? Ankle not broken.
DVT can vary.: Depending on the degree and nature of the sprain, you can expect varying degrees of bruising, not only on your ankle but also up your calf. Yes: The ankle will swell for quite some time. Ice several times daily, elevate the extremity and if you can safely take it, ibuprofen will help. Once you can begin range of motion this should help with swelling as well. If you are not in one I would recommend a pneumatic cam walker and ask your physician for consult for physical therapy. Walk on it if possible....(I.e crutches).

I sprained my ankle 12 days ago and still have bruising and swelling. I am walking on it but its' still stiff and painful. Is this normal?
Highly variable time: Foot and toe swelling after a significant ankle sprain lingers until the ankle swelling diminishes, since it is in part due simply to the limited outflow capabilities of normal capacity. This is from the "blockage" of outflow and compression of the exiting pathways by the swollen and pressurized tissues around the ankle. Early icing, elevation, and compression will help the ankle swelling. ...Read more
