Stubbed toe, (beside big toe) few days ago, bruising, min. Swelling but hurts when I move it, esp. Right on top of foot, could I have fractured it?

Stubbed toe, (beside big toe) few days ago, bruising, min. Swelling but hurts when I move it, esp. Right on top of foot, could I have fractured it?

Maybe: Only way to tell is with an X-ray. If the toe is still straight, the only thing that is usually done is a splint to the adjacent toe. If the symptoms are bad enough, and/or the toe is deformed, best to have an X-ray. See an orthopedist next week to get this done. Otherwise, need to go to an ER. Hope this helps! ...Read more

I hit the top of foot by outside ankle 2 days ago. Very little swelling and bruising. Now aches from big toe up to back lower leg. Could I be broken?

I hit the top of foot by outside ankle 2 days ago. Very little swelling and bruising. Now aches from big toe up to back lower leg. Could I be broken?

Soft tissue trauma.: An x-ray can be used to identify most fractures for sure. So, removing all doubt would necessitate having an x-ray. My take is that you have managed to traumatize either a nerve or tendon passing through the area. Unfortunately an x-ray won't show these problems. An evaluation would help in isolating the source of your pain. Thank you for consulting Healthtap. ...Read more

Pain near toes for 4weeks, now small boney lump on top of foot. Fuzzy feeling in toes. Could this be a fracture? No swelling, little bruising.

Pain near toes for 4weeks, now small boney lump on top of foot. Fuzzy feeling in toes. Could this be a fracture? No swelling, little bruising.

Ganglion cyst?: Sounds like this could be a ganglion cyst (fluid filled bump). Does it move around? Could be interfering with a nerve causing the "fuzzy" feeling in the toes. Usually there is no bruising with a ganglion unless the cause was trauma. This should be checked out by your physician. You can never be too cautious about bumps or lumps. ...Read more

After lump and bruising on top of foot I had a ct (no contrast) and was diagnosed with a ganglion cyst. Can a radiologist tell this is a ganglion and not a tumor from just looking at the scan? They seemed very confident but I'm over researching.

After lump and bruising on top of foot I had a ct (no contrast) and was diagnosed with a ganglion cyst. Can a radiologist tell this is a ganglion and not a tumor from just looking at the scan? They seemed very confident but I'm over researching.

Different tissues.: You can have a high degree in confidence that the radiologist can differentiate between the two based on the ct scan. Generally speaking cysts are sacs filled with air, water or some other fluid. Tumors more solidly clumped tissues. ...Read more

1 cm, perfectly circular bruise on top of foot. Very small pinpoint at center. No swelling, redness, raising, etc. What was I bit by? Cause for worry?

Varies: There are a number of possibilities, among the more common and sometimes concerning can be a spider bite, particularly a brown recluse spider. You should seek attention if the area becomes dark appearing or shows any sign of infection such as redness or swelling; or if the size of the area is increasing. ...Read more

Stool dropped on top of foot, instant bruise. Can walk fine but very painful to touch. When should I get checked out?

Hard to say?: If one is able to walk after this type of injury, and there is bruising and swelling, usually one can determine after elevating the extremity, placing ice on it, and perhaps taking some ibuprofen, that they would be able to tell if they need to be seen or not. If there is any chance of deformity of the foot, one would definitely need to be seen in a few hours to a day or so. ...Read more

Bruising = injury: Bruising is the visible sign of underlying bleeding. In the foot, this could be bony bleeding from a fracture, or soft tissue bleeding from a ligament or muscle. An orthopaedic evaluation and likely X-rays is warranted to make the diagnosis and be sure you do not do any further damage. ...Read more

Afraid I have sarcom on top of foot after bump and large bruise. Was told broken vessel after x-ray and cancer wouldn't bruise like that. Is this true?

Afraid I have sarcom on top of foot after bump and large bruise. Was told broken vessel after x-ray and cancer wouldn't bruise like that. Is this true?

Hematoma, not sarcom: You most likely have a hematoma (a pooled collection of blood clots underneath the skin), a common condition that can occur after a physical injury. It's more common if you are on blood thinners. Sarcomas are usually slow-growing lumps (takes months/yrs). The only way to be sure is to perform a biopsy. Continue treatment, but talk to a doc who knows you well, esp if not healing. Or use HT Prime. ...Read more

Severe ankle sprain 8 days ago. Still can't walk, top of foot numb, bruising severe. How long should take to heal? Can I damage further trying to walk

Ankle sprain: Normal healing of a sprained ankle takes several weeks (on average). If its a chronically sprained ankle with constant pain and instability, it will take longer than a "normal" sprain. Yes, a sprain can get worse. Usually 3-4 weeks of rest, icing, antiinflammatory meds (like advil (ibuprofen) or motrin), bracing or compressing wraps, with or without physical therapy should be normal. Hope that helps! ...Read more

New sandals wore to tight across boney top of foot. Next morning had sharp pain in bare foot, puffy vein, itching then a bruise. This from shoes? Worry

Why Worry.: It certainly sounds like it is. Not to worry. The shoe has put some stress on the soft tissues of the foot. The tissues have responded accordingly and now need time to repair. Rest the foot as much as possible, try not to put too much shoe pressure on the sore spot. Applying some ice to the area may help as well as taking some NSAIDS. If things don't improve in a couple of days, see a doctor. ...Read more

Follow up required: If you have a knot which is not due to trauma, it can be cancerous (? sarcoma). But since you have just noticed this, it is too soon to tell which way it will go. Watch it for 1 to 2 weeks and check if it is increasing in size (ask you souse or friend to also put the fingers around and assess the current size. In case it increases in size over next 2 to 3 weeks, then you should go see your doctor. ...Read more

11/4 I was diagnosed with a broken vessel/vein on top of foot after pain, knot, and bruising. Now, the bruising is fading but knot is purple. Was told X-ray was normal, showed soft tissue prominence lateral to 5th metatarsal. Could this be a sarcoma?

X-Rays Vs MRI: Plane X-ray of the foot is good for detection of a broken bone but it will not show the soft tissue problems like sarcoma. For the latter you will need a MRI test which is the best test to check for a soft tissue sarcoma. But you need to first go see your doctor and show him the knot that you are concerned about. ...Read more

Yesterday green lump that looked like large vein appeared on top of foot. Felt bruised. Today it's a small red bump surrounded by green bruise. Dvt?

In theory: It would not be a DVT as the D stands for deep. There is the dorsal venous arch that could get a clot but it would be superficial. Clots in the foot are usually very painful to the exact spot of the clot. If you still have something there why not go get it checked out.... ...Read more

Bruise on top of foot, cramping and pain on bottom. Hurts to put weight on it and I did not hit it or drop anything on it. Fracture? Blood clot? Etc?

See orthopedist: Fracture would be unlikely if there wasn't a definite injury, but the bruise suggests that something may have happened which you weren't aware of. Blood clot is unlikely in the foot. I would recommend evaluation by an orthopedist, to include x-rays. ...Read more

Very sharp pain when pointing my right big toe. Same (sharp shock) type pain when touching 1st metatarsal or highest boney area on top of foot?

Neurogenic pain.: Sharp, shocky type pain located in and around the toes are almost always due to a nerve being irritated. The goal is to identify the exact location of the irritation and eliminate it. The cause could be underlying bone or cyst causing irritation to the nerve and the irritation has reached the point that pain is caused for protection. Seeing a specialist is the first step toward relief. ...Read more

Sudden pain on top of foot, was not doing amytjong. Hurts to bend toes, flex or point foot, walk up/down stairs not so much when walking regular.

Injury to tendons: Many times we strain ligaments and tendons, without realizing or remembering. When you injure an extensor tendon (function in raising the toes and foot) it will hurt to flex and point your toes. The injury only hurts at the end range of motion. We tend to keep walking on such injures and they become slow to heal. Resting such injuries, result in a faster recovery. ...Read more
