My friend is experiencing bruising and minor swelling on the top side of foot, following distal fibula fracture surgery. Should we worry?

Probably not: It is always smart to check with the surgeon if there is signficant pain in a new area following surgery, but gravity is usually the culprit here. With any surgery or broken bone there is always some bleeding, and in the case of the foot, one would expect that bleeding to travel downward, when visible through skin, it shows as bruisng. You will see this in bad ankle sprains even without a break. ...Read more

Swelling (Definition)

Swelling is the enlargement of organs, skin, or other body parts. It is caused by a buildup of fluid in the tissues. The extra fluid can lead to a rapid increase in weight over a short period of time (days to weeks). Swelling can occur all over the body (generalized) or only in one part ...Read more

1 cm, perfectly circular bruise on top of foot. Very small pinpoint at center. No swelling, redness, raising, etc. What was I bit by? Cause for worry?

1 cm, perfectly circular bruise on top of foot. Very small pinpoint at center. No swelling, redness, raising, etc. What was I bit by? Cause for worry?

Varies: There are a number of possibilities, among the more common and sometimes concerning can be a spider bite, particularly a brown recluse spider. You should seek attention if the area becomes dark appearing or shows any sign of infection such as redness or swelling; or if the size of the area is increasing. ...Read more

Stubbed toe, (beside big toe) few days ago, bruising, min. swelling but hurts when I move it, esp. right on top of foot, could I have fractured it?

Stubbed toe, (beside big toe) few days ago, bruising, min. swelling but hurts when I move it, esp. right on top of foot, could I have fractured it?

Maybe : Only way to tell is with an X-ray. If the toe is still straight, the only thing that is usually done is a splint to the adjacent toe. If the symptoms are bad enough, and/or the toe is deformed, best to have an X-ray. See an orthopedist next week to get this done. Otherwise, need to go to an ER. Hope this helps! ...Read more

I hit the top of foot by outside ankle 2 days ago. Very little swelling and bruising. Now aches from big toe up to back lower leg. Could I be broken?

Soft tissue trauma.: An x-ray can be used to identify most fractures for sure. So, removing all doubt would necessitate having an x-ray. My take is that you have managed to traumatize either a nerve or tendon passing through the area. Unfortunately an x-ray won't show these problems. An evaluation would help in isolating the source of your pain. Thank you for consulting Healthtap. ...Read more

Pain near toes for 4weeks,now small boney lump on top of foot.fuzzy feeling in toes.could this be a fracture? No swelling, little bruising.

Ganglion cyst?: Sounds like this could be a ganglion cyst (fluid filled bump). Does it move around? Could be interfering with a nerve causing the "fuzzy" feeling in the toes. Usually there is no bruising with a ganglion unless the cause was trauma. This should be checked out by your physician. You can never be too cautious about bumps or lumps. ...Read more

Type your question here...pain on top of foot, knot, swelling. Mole at site appeared recently. What could it be?

Type your question here...pain on top of foot, knot, swelling. Mole at site appeared recently. What could it be?

Several diagnoses: A knot on top of the foot can be anything from a soft tissue mass to a simple ganglion cyst to an abscess. If there is pain involved you need to be evaluated by a foot specialist and xrays and possibly an MRI is needed. The 'mole' may be incidental but in very rare cases, a malignant skin lesion may be the cause. Go see the doctor! ...Read more

Banged the inside top of foot a week ago, now healed. No swelling, but now the outside top of same foot is throbbing 1 week later. Can it be related?

Banged the inside top of foot a week ago, now healed. No swelling, but now the outside top of same foot is throbbing 1 week later. Can it be related?

Yes: You may have been guarding the portion of the foot that was painful last week causing an overuse injury to the other side of the foot. This can be treated with rest or preferably a removable walking boot. I would suggest you see a podiatrist. ...Read more

Need to find cause: Of the swelling. I would imagine if you had the condition for three years, you must of sought prior help. Why don't you share what was told to you so far? Without seeing your foot, you don't provide enough information to make an educated diagnosis...... ...Read more
