Liver (Definition)

This organ plays a major role in metabolism and has a number of functions in the body, including glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, plasma protein synthesis, hormone production, and detoxification. It lies below the diaphragm in the abdominal-pelvic region of the abdomen. It produces bile, an alkaline compound which aids in digestion via the emulsification of ...Read more

If advanced disease: If liver disease has progressed significantly to cause a decline in production of clotting factors, or if there is low platelet production with cirrhosis, easy bruising may develop.

The last 2 days I've been experiencing pain on my right sight around my liver n gallbladder. It is swollen. There is now small bruise in that area.

The last 2 days I've been experiencing pain on my right sight around my liver n gallbladder. It is swollen. There is now small bruise in that area.

Right sided abdomina: Liver and/or gall bladder problems would not cause a bruise to form on the abdominal wall unless there was marked pressure on this area during an examination. Is there a history of some injury to your right upper abdominal muscles? Nevertheless in view of your persistent symptoms, you should be examined by a physician who will order any appropriate tests in order to make a diagnosis.

I have a bruise on my arm that's growing, what could cause this? My liver is swollen.

Be seen: An expanding bruise is an expanding bleed under the skin. If your liver is not working properly to make blood coagulation proteins, it could be a sign of a more serious problem. You should see your doctor.

Chronic liver diseases of any cause, i.e. Infectious (viral hep), autoimmune, medication related, alcohol related, metabolic abnormalities (iron, copper diseases), others, can cause problems with clotting. Diagnosed with mild fatty infiltration of liver in july 13 enzymes keep fluctuating and easy unexplained bruising does this mean cirrhosis?

Diagnosed with mild fatty infiltration of liver in july 13 enzymes keep fluctuating and easy unexplained bruising does this mean cirrhosis?

Not necessarily: Mild fatty infiltration is common in patients who are overweight. High liver enzymes can be caused by many things, such as certain medications, infection (hepatitis), excessive alcohol use and other liver or biliary problems. Easy bruising can be caused by liver issues, certain medications and other hematologic conditons. Please see a doctor for evaluation and close followup.

Is a deep 'bruised'-feeling pain near bottom-right ribs that can be provoked with twist/stretch likely to be muscular, not liver-related? Had 3 weeks.

Pain near ribs: This pain with a twisting motion is much more likely to be muscle or skeleton related versus liver or gallbladder. If the symptoms continue, I would highly recommend you see your physician for further testing.

Which type of genetic liver disease can cause abnormal bleeding and bruises?

Genetic liver: Liver cirrhosis from several causes can be associated with abnormalities in blood clotting and that can present with bleeding and bruising. Why does clotting and excessive bruising occur in hepatocytes (liver cells) during alcohol abuse?

Why does clotting and excessive bruising occur in hepatocytes (liver cells) during alcohol abuse?

Metabolic toxin: Alcohol produces a number of metabolic effects that damage liver cells, cause fat accummulation in liver, liver cell necrosis/death, cirrhosis and liver cancer. Clotting and bruising are not medical terms with reference to hepatocytes.

Can you tell me if throughout alcohol abuse, why does clotting and excessive bruising occur when alcohol damages hepatocytes (liver cells)?

Can you tell me if throughout alcohol abuse, why does clotting and excessive bruising occur when alcohol damages hepatocytes (liver cells)?

Alcohol: Affects multiple organ systems, not just the liver. To your question, though, fibrinogen and other clotting factors are produced in the liver. Alcohol interferes with their production and activity in various ways, to the effect that alchol has both a procoagulant (which would increase clotting) and anticoagulant (the opposite) effects. Whichever pathway dominates will determine the net effect.

I'm waitin to see doc for scan on my liver and my legs r itching that bad that they r bruising is this anything to do with my liver?

May be liver problem: The liver has been functions such as producing proteins, blood clotting factors, modulating your blood glucose and excreting bilirubin. If you have liver dysfunction, there can be a variety of symptoms. Itching can result if you have liver dysfunction and a high bilirubin level. Bile salts can deposit in the skin resulting in itching, though the mechanism is unclear. Bruising is also related.

Galbladder surgery a month ago, now feeling bruised on left side. Extremely tender to touch. I do have an enlarged liver and spleen. What could it be?

Galbladder surgery a month ago, now feeling bruised on left side. Extremely tender to touch. I do have an enlarged liver and spleen. What could it be?

Post surgery care: Your surgeon will want to see you, and you should check in. Liver and gallbladder are on the right side, however some patients feel the pain/pressure on the left. There are several possibilities, fluid collection and bile leak need to be ruled out. Okay to ask about ultrasound or nuclear tech hida to check this out.
