Tripped, fell, top of foot swollen for 5 days. Painful, switches between mild and severe. What do I do? No other part of foot swollen.
Get checked: You could have a fracture and there is no way to be sure without an x-ray. Don't walk on it, if it hurts. If we could tell whether or not you had a fracture by reading your description or just by looking at the outside of your foot, then x-rays would not have been invented! Get checked so you know how badly you are injured and how long it will take to heal, too! Hope it's nothing major! ...Read more

Ankle Sprain: X-rays only show bone. When you injure your ankle you can injure the ligaments. Ankle sprains can cause severe pain, swelling and purpura. This is usually treated with rest, ice, compression and elevation ...Read more
I dropped a metal water bottle filled with ice water on top of my foot. It is swollen and bruised but pain is mild to moderate. Is it broken?
Xray or time: Are the only two ways to be certain of this. An xray can be done to check for any fracture. If you are able to walk and bear weight normally, you could wait and see how things are in several days and seek medical care if you've had no improvement. Most injuries like this are contusions to the soft tissue; ice, elevation, and over the counter pain relievers can help. Good luck! ...Read more
