Achilles tear?: With a calf injury as you describe, worry about exact location. Higher up on leg suggests likely muscle injury and resulting hematoma. Mid-leg or distal pain in lower third of leg may suggest muscle-tendon or Achille's tendon injury that would warrant thorough evaluation by health care provider experienced in evaluating calf injuries. ...Read more

What areMedial gastrocnemius Strain symptoms? Running yesterday, cramp inside right calf just below knee, feel pull when sleep and tender? Advice?

Pain medial calf: Sounds as very well could be medial gastroc strain. Symptoms generally self limited and should improve with time. For now recommend avoid provocative activities (running), gentle stretching as tol, anti-inflammatories, ice, etc. Would fully expect this to improve over a week or so. Unlikely to represent a tear which is extremely painful and associated with significant swelling. ...Read more

Be seen: Without really being able to see it, I would recommend you be seen. Unless you clearly have an explanation for it like a minor injury or very mild burn, you are lacking a diagnosis and it could potentially be harmful. You might consider being seen and evaluated. ...Read more

Post evlt 5 days. No expected symptoms. No bruising, no hard cord in my leg, problem spot still hurts. Does this mean it didn't work, or veins reopend?

Post evlt 5 days. No expected symptoms. No bruising, no hard cord in my leg, problem spot still hurts. Does this mean it didn't work, or veins reopend?

Not Necessarily: It can take up to 6 weeks to get the appropriate response following evlt. Not everyone gets bruising or a hard cord in the leg following treatment, so that is not a problem that you did not. There is less than a 5% failure treatment rate after evlt, so the odds are that the treatment did work. I would always suggest an ultrasound within 1 week after treatment ; that should give you the answer. ...Read more

I was told that I had a deep tissue bruise in my calf about 7 years ago. It feels pretty similar to a knot, no discoloration. Is this normal?

Bruise: Bruises don't last 7 years, and neither do hematomas (blood collections). More likely there is a tear in the muscle which scarred. An MRI is needed to evaluate for other problems as well to image the soft tissues. ...Read more
