Bump: likely a hematoma or collection of old blood. Should slowly resolve over a few weeks. If doesn't, go see an MD to confirm diagnosis. ...Read more

Muscle (Definition)

It is a body tissue that has the ability to contract. It shortens and generates force. It relaxes and returns to its original length. Muscles move joints, stabilize the body, move air and food through the organs, act as valves for bladder, bowel and other organs. They control movement of the eyes. They help us express ourselves by changing the shape of our ...Read more

Still normal: Bruises from surgery may last a few weeks. Watch for the bruise to shift colors from typical black and blue to yellow, red and green colors near the edges. This should assure you the blood that leaked into the soft tissues is being dissolved and absorbed with time. You can use alternating heat and cold therapy to help dissolve it. 5 min. Ice and 5 min. Hot moist towel for 3 cycles- do 3 x a day. ...Read more

Tendons/muscle on lateral side of forearm near the elbow spasm, swell, hurt and is tender. X-ray and ultrasound show nothing is wrong. What may it be?

Tennis elbow?: Might be inflammation at the origin site of the extensor tendons on the lateral epicondyle of the elbow. Ultrasound and xray would be normal; an MRI would likely show some edema/swelling there in the form of increased t2 signal, but this expensive test may not be necessary. You may just need some rest, ice, and possibly anti-inflammatory meds like ibuprofen. See doctor though if it continues. ...Read more

I feel like I have a bruise on my left forearm but I don't see one. It only hurts when I press on it or flex my arm a certain way.

Soft tissue swelling: A slight muscle strain can cause a deep bruise as can bumping into something. If there is no significant limitation to the use, strength, or range of motion of the arm, then it will likely resolve in a few short days. For discomfort, you can ice, and use ibuprofen. ...Read more

Periosteal hematoma: This is the fancy name for a bruise of the bone itself, where blood accumulates between the bone and the tissue which lines the outside (the periosteum). Ice for 48 hours, followed by heat may help it resolve, and Ibuprofen after 24 hours will probably be more useful than hydrocodone (200-400 mg three to four times a day with food or milk). If it persists longer, you may have a hairline fracture. ...Read more

Let's see?: Often we strain or sprain parts of the body without realizing it. A movement is made, a slip or a stumble or lifting or what have you. You do not feel the effects until later when the sore muscle, the strained tissues or tendons become inflamed and the inflammatory process sets in. Usually ice and Ibuprofen will relieve minor to moderate problems. Sometimes heat. If lingers, b seen. ...Read more
