Several Causes: White spots on skin have many causes. In folks older than 40, the main cause is sun damage called " idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis". It happes mostly on the forearms and shins. Just less contrast: Tanning is a mistake to try to cover dark spots. The dark spots can also get darker with increased pigment. Tanning just some times makes the contrast less noticeable for a short time. Address the biologic reason for the dark spots. If they are nevi, then tanning can increase the risk of skin cancer.
