Brown Recluse Spider (Overview)

Three pairs of eyes instead of the usual four makes the identification of the spider, the eyes making the face look like a human skull. Treatment includes dapsone. Bites often get misdiagnosed, and are frequently bacterial infections like mrsa. Brown recluse venom is a vasoconstrictor, and Nitroglycerin causes vasodilation and theoretically can prevent necrosis. Treat sooner rather than later!

Can a brown recluse spider hurt when they bite you?

Can a brown recluse spider hurt when they bite you?

There is often no: Pain when they actually bite you. A blister develops with swelling. It then enlarges, hardens ; becomes red. This develops into an ulcer. Other symptoms may include: nausea, vomiting, joint pain, fevers, chills and possibly a rash over the body with small red to purple dots. This can be a painful condition.

Will a brown recluse spider hurt when they bite you?

My story: I was bit by a brown recluse over twenty years ago. It did not hurt when bit. But I went on to have fever, swelling of my arm, necrosis of tissue around the bite and I had musculo-skeletal pain all over. I basically felt like roadkill. My understanding is that some people don't have much of reaction to it.

Could you tell me what happens if you were bitten by a brown recluse spider?

Could you tell me what happens if you were bitten by a brown recluse spider?

Large ulcer: Brown recluse has a fat eating poison. Once you are bitten by one, you will see an ulceration which keeps getting larger and larger. It is rare that you notice the spider itself. Treatment is surgical.

If bitten by a brown recluse spider and left untreated what usually happens to it?

Necrosis: The problem with this type of spider is the venom causes necrosis (death) of tissue. However, there really isn't a medicine that has been shown to stop this damage. Right now the best care is meticulous wound care.

What does a brown recluse spider look like dead?

Brown Recluse: In the mature brown recluse spider as well as some other species of recluse spiders, the dark violin marking is well defined, with the neck of the violin pointing toward the bulbous abdomen. The abdomen is uniformly colored, although the coloration can range from light tan to dark brown, and is covered with numerous fine hairs that provide a velvety appearance.

Do a lot of people get brown recluse spider bites?

Not many: Brown recluse spiders are mostly in the midwest, usually in basements and hidden areas. They are not aggressive but will bite if disturbed. Most spider bites are by other species. Look for the fiddle pattern on the spider. Bites are rare but need serious attention as they lead to a persistent necrosis which can last for months.

What do I do if I think I've been bitten by a brown recluse spider? Er?!

Spider bite: Please be evaluated by primary care, dermatology or the ER. If it is a wound healing issue see plastic surgery and possibly Infectious Disease. Drug of Choice is Dapsone (old leprosy treatment).

Please let me know if there is an anti-venom for the brown recluse spider?

Brow Recluse: No antivenom-yet. There is treatment. Dapsone (an old leprosy drug) is useful. If the bite is already necrotic then debridement and wound care may be necessary.

My son may have touched a brown recluse spider. Is it poisonous to touch it if you are not bit?

My son may have touched a brown recluse spider. Is it poisonous to touch it if you are not bit?

Only if bitten: The brown recluse spider is poisonous only if it bites a person. The spider eats insects and does not feed on humans. It may bite if startled, scared, or accidentally touched by a person. The bite site will be reddened, swollen, and painful within a few hours. If bitten, one should see his doctor or visit the emergency room for proper treatment.

How is the brown recluse spider bite treated?

Observe: If there is good reason to believe that the spider bite is from a brown recluse, you will receive antibiotics and tetanus prophylaxis. You will use cold compresses and observe the bite at home for a few days for signs of progression such as blistering, pain, color change in skin around bite and fever. If these appear, you need to go back to the ER. Best wishes

How do people treat brown recluse spider bite?

How do people treat brown recluse spider bite?

NOT surgery: The drug Dapsone is often advocated, but there is no firm evidence that it helps. Nitroglycerine patches may be effective; brown recluse venom constricts blood vessels and Nitroglycerin dilates them, but again, no proof that it helps. Surgery is ineffective and may actually worsen the outcome.

Brown recluse spider bite--what can be done for one?

Brown recluse spider bite--what can be done for one?

See below: Depending on the severity of the symptoms, the bite may only require local wound care done at home up to the worst situation - requiring admission to a hospital. If the bite becomes red, swollen, warm and painful with possible black central area tissue destruction (necrosis), it may require medical care for secondary infection or debridement of dead tissue.
