Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Reactive airways: Once your airways are inflamed by a viral illness, they may not settle down easily. I wonder if you've been diagnosed with asthma - or if any close relatives have that? If that's the case, you probably have some residual inflammation in the airways that is causing the cough. Albuterol might help. If it's bad a steroid inhaler like fluticasone would be needed. Talk to your doc about getting one.

Time to see your MD: If you are experiencing symptom for the first time, however it may very well be mild viral respiratory infection as it seems that you are otherwise fine, but better be checked out. Meanwhile, drink more fluids, OTC wet cough medicines would help, especially those with guafenisen, follow instructions written, best wishes

Virus: Symptoms caused by viral infections can vary from person to person and sometimes randomly based on site of initial infection. Many viruses can cause bronchitis in one person and laryngitis in the next. Expect symptoms to last 7-14 days.

Had influenza A couple weeks ago, symptoms gone except croupy cough. Possibly bronchitis?

Check temperature: I agree that most likely you do not have bacterial pneumonia which some patients develop following a viral infection. Viruses may cause damage to the lining of the airway. In the meantime, a humidifier and staying well hydrated, while recovering are suggested. If you have problems breathing and/or fever, please see your physician. If the cough lasts longer than 3 weeks, follow up is advised.

Follow up: It is still possible, but cough is a common finding during bronchitis. Most bronchitic infections are caused by viral infections. Pulm virtual consult available to discuss.

Does the beginning symptoms of acute bronchitis include burning dry cough and intermittent wheezing?

Yes: Those can be the beginning of bronchitis or any upper respiratory infection. This is almost always viral and takes 5-10 days to clear. If you run a fever and/or are short of breath see your doctor. Otherwise rest, fluids, DayQuil/NyQuil and time!

URI: Cough can be the main symptoms of a cold or upper respiratory infection. Are you short of breath? If not, then you can manage your symptoms at home with OTC meds like Dayquil and Nyquil. In a non-smoker these symptoms will resolve on their own within 7-10 days. Antibiotics do not treat viral infections.

Female, age 70, has the third severe bronchitis like symptom in a year, each lasting more than 3 weeks. Albuterol inhaler causes more cough. Cause?

COPD?: She may have copd. Cxr and pfts are very useful. Most patients need anti inflammatory medications such as inhaled steroids. Spiriva is often quite useful also. Albuterol dilates the airways but does not treat the underlying inflammation. Have her checked by a lung doc.

Is it possible to just wake up with bronchitis one day? My son woke up with a cough 2 days ago. No other symptoms until yesterday. Runny nose now too.

Is it possible to just wake up with bronchitis one day? My son woke up with a cough 2 days ago. No other symptoms until yesterday. Runny nose now too.

Likely virus: Many youngsters get respiratory viruses suddenly. They are well and then suddenly start to cough. "bronchtis" is the term usually used for a wet cough. Fever and runny nose can also come with the cough. It should be done in 3 - 5 days. If he gets a lot worse or it lasts longer, call your doctor. Keep fluids going and be generous with tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen to make him more comfortable.

Diagnosed with bronchitis, Have all the symptoms chest pains, mucus but no cough. Could it be something else? Blood clot?

It could always: Be something else but why do you think a blood clot? A blood clot at your age especially, would be very very unusual. Your doctor thought bronchitis based on your history and physical exam. He or she is the best to determine that.

3 weeks ago I had a terrible cough, pain/burn in chest etc; minor bronchitis (z-pac and predisone). I have these symptoms again, is it something else?

Possibly: If your cough is from new-onset asthma, this is what one would expect. On the other hand, you might have had a sinus infection which had not responded to Z-Pak. You need to consult your doctor again to get examined. At the minimum, a lung function test should be considered.

Wheezing, cough, short breath, COPD symptoms... 21 yr old male, nonsmoker. Has been diagnosed as severe bronchitis/pneumonia before. Symptoms back now?

Asthma: At 21 it would seem to me that COPD is not an option rather acute flare up of asthma. And from what you say not well controlled. I suggest a visit to your primary care physician or allergist/pulmonologist to help control the symptoms

My 2 year old just had a chest xray and was diagnosed with bronchitis. He has no cough or other symptoms other than high fever. Does this make sense?

My 2 year old just had a chest xray and was diagnosed with bronchitis. He has no cough or other symptoms other than high fever. Does this make sense?

Easy over read: Radiologists often make a suggested diagnosis based on assumptions. You only order chest xrays if you suspect a chest finding. If the xray is taken before the kid takes a deep breath, it will look like bronchitis. The suggested label from the radiologist is just that, a suggestion, they also say this needs to have clinical correlation. The doc may have just used the label to finish the visit

You: You could very well have bronchitis based on your symptoms, however you will need to be evaluated by a medical professional to be sure. A basic auscultation of your lungs with a stethoscope may be all that is necessary to make the diagnosis. Additional testing may be done if deemed necessary (x-ray, sputum culture). Bronchitis can be viral or bacterial; most commonly viral, which usually resolves on it's own by one to two weeks. Good luck.

Common cold or bronchitis? Symptoms: Tired, Lime color mucous, raspy cough, no tight chest, wheezing/gurgling before cough, headache, body ache. Thanx

Possible Bronchitis: It is difficult to say without examination. But it is more likely you are having Bronchitis as you are wheezing And it seems like a viral infection causing your Bronchitis. I advice you drink plenty fluids and consult your Doctor, get checked and treated appropriately. Do not smoke or be around some one who smokes It can also turn into Pneumonia sometimes
