My dad has bronchitis is on meds but can't cough anything up and still can't breathe is it pneumonia?

My dad has bronchitis is on meds but can't cough anything up and still can't breathe is it pneumonia?

Could be.: Sometimes the symptoms of pneumonia could look like bronchitis. If your dad is a smoker, diabetic, elderly (70s or 80s), or has COPD or asthma, he's at greater risk of complications from bronchitis (i.e. Developing pneumonia). He needs to see his physician get his lungs listened to again. A chest xray may also help with the diagnosis of pneumonia. Good luck! ...Read more

Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

I have a small lump, upper right side of chest. Coughing, couldn'tcatch my breath sometimes. Is this pneumonia or bronchitis?

2 separate issues: Neither pneumonia nor bronchitis would cause a "lump" on the outer chest wall. Coughing and trouble breathing can be related to asthma. Coughing up thick, pus mucus with associated fever and chills suggests pneumonia. Bronchitis is an infection in the large bronchi. A chest x-ray would help differentiate some of these conditions. A physical exam is necessary to assess the "lump.". ...Read more

Could prescribed meds w steroids for persistent cough from bronchitis and walking pneumonia cause dysfunction of parathyroid or hyperparathyroidism?

Hyperparathyroidism: Primary hyperparathyroidism results from overproduction of parathormone. There is oversecretion of PTH due to adenoma, hyperplasia or, rarely, carcinoma of the parathyroid glands. Secondary disease is seldom if ever due to corticosteroids. I want to breathe normally again. 3+ months ago I had pneumonia/bronchitis and now my asthma is getting worse. I'm on advair 100/50. I'm really scared?

Don't panic: First. See your pcp or a pulmonologist. Your advair diskis is at the lowest dose. It also comes 250/50 and 500/50. You may need to have it increased. A rescue inhaler will also be of use. Like albuterol or atrovent (ipratropium) or both (combivent). You should find out if your allergic to anything and then remove those triggers from your environment. Flu & pneumonia shots will help prevent catastrophe. ...Read more

Family member is 54 yo and has been smoking since 14 yo. Now experiences chronic seasonal bronchitis and periodic pneumonia. She had a very minor car accident at work and had to submit to a breath tester for alcohol as a condition of employment. No one

No one what??: Wish I had the end of your posting. Heavy smokers, esp who start early, are often drinkers, sometimes heavy ones. Since I don't really know what your question is, I will assume that her breath test was positive. Get a professional evaluation by an addiction counselor or physician&work on smoking cessation. Alanon may be helpful for family members and friends to deal with reactions to alcohol use. ...Read more

21month boy, history of pneumonia and bronchitis. Already on zpack and breathing treatments this year. Wet breath sounds right after tx, what else can I do?

Hydrate, avoid smoke: When sick with an upper respiratory infection one should stay well hydrated & avoid irritants like smoke. If there is a fever it should be treated with acetaminophen as fever will contribute to dehydration. If the child's caregivers smoke, they should quit for the sake of the child's health. I would also be concerned about this child's immune status with a serious medical history like this. ...Read more

Signs of pneumonia? I had a acute bronchitis and after a month I still cough. I only cough in the morning & night other than that I feel fine...

Persistent cough: Persistent cough can be from a number of conditons, including post-nasal drip, allergies, infection, and acid reflux. If you notice the cough more when you are lying flat (night and morning), you may have acid reflux. I would consider this as a potential for your persistent cough. Viral cough can weeks, even if infection is clear so you may need to just give it more time. Discuss with your PCP ...Read more

I was recently dx with bronchitis & pneumonia. Fever free for more than 24 hrs, but I still have a productive cough. Is it okay to go back to work?

Depends: There is No definitive correct answer here, but your Treating provider would be able to best answer that question. Depending on the time and onset of your symptoms, how many days treatment of antiBx you have had, etc all may play a role in a return to work date. If you work alone, you may be fine, but if you are around many others in a closed space, then a productive cough would be frowned upon. ...Read more

My 2 yr old has a cold with cough, but no fever. How likely is it that he has bronchitis or pneumonia with no fever? A play mate of his has pneumonia.

Likly virus: Many more children have virus infections with cough than develop pneumonia from bacteria germs. Most of the time, bacterial pneumonia has at least some fever with it. Most of the time, bronchitis just means a wet junky-sounding cough. Call your doctor if fever over 100.5 comes up or if the illness lasts 5-7 days. The playmate could have a virus pneumonia that might be just a cold in your child. ...Read more
