Dr. Steven Arbit answered:

Is a broken ankle swollen or painful?

Yes

Extremity-joint-ankle
Fractured (broken) ankles can be both painful and swollen. There are other conditions that can cause pain and swelling in a joint such as the ankle. If there has been trauma to the ankle, a sprain could give the same symptoms.

Is a cast needed for a broken ankle?

Broken ankle

Extremity-joint-ankle
The answer depends on the type of fracture. If it is not surgically reduced, immobilization is critically important. There are certain types of minor fractures that do not require casting, but for the most part, it is an important part of the approach to maximizing the healing.

Is a boot or a cast for better for a broken ankle?

Depends

Broken_ankle
If the ankle is a non-displaced fracture (which means that there is a broken bone, but is essentially in the same place and is in a stable position) then you could be placed in a walking boot. If it is an unstable fracture, then you should be placed in a cast to prevent any further motion in the fracture area.

Dr. David Laha answered:

How much recovery time do you need after a broken ankle cast?

Will vary

Open-uri20120710-8106-18bp724
A simple rule of thumb: for every day you are immobilized (crutches, splint, cast, cast boot, etc), it will take you two days to recover fom the immobilization. If you are immobilized for 6 weeks, it will take an addition 12 weeks to feel like you have recovered. This is not hard and fast, but is a simple guide. There are may factors tht play into your recovery. Dr zl
