Broke big toe on 8/12. Detached toenail. Skin is falling off in sheets from ALL toes on the foot. No cast. Walking boot, now surgical shoe. Why?

Quit Sloughing off.: Skin sloughing, particularly after a period of immobilization and departure from one's daily bathing routine, is almost a given when the immobilization and swelling end. Layers of dead skin cells that are normally sloughed during one's daily routine have piled up and are revealed as these skin "sheets". One can only imagine how much skin is shedded daily by your body daily. ...Read more

Broke big toe in 4 places (one is displaced) had surgery to remove infection from bone. 5 weeks since this and still incredibly painful to walk!?

A "tough Break": No PUN intended. This is a "tough fracture" The bone should heal in 5-8 weeks after infection controlled you will need Physical Therapy!! You use the great toe to "shove off" when you walk/run! A sports medicine/podiatrist plus Physical Therapy are the "answer"
Good Luck
Hope this helps

Years ago I broke my big toe; it hurts again (because of bad shoes? Which I threw out) coworker says it's gout? When should I see a dr.? Gout? Y or n?

Gout or not: Abroken toe usually heals in about six weeks and does not give pain after it has healed. I think my 13 year daughter broke her big toe. Should I take her to the ER we have iced her foot and had her elevate it. What would they do if it was broke

I think my 13 year daughter broke her big toe. Should I take her to the ER we have iced her foot and had her elevate it. What would they do if it was broke

Growing: Growing bone, which is almost certainly present in your 13 year old's foot, have growth plates, which are very fragile; more fragile than ligaments in someone that age. It's therefore pretty common to see a fractured growth plate in a 13 year old than it is to see any sort of "sprain." the good news, though, is that most growth plate injuries heal quickly and uneventfully, usually in 3-4 weeks.

Considering your daughter's age, I would get it x-rays to see 1) if the growth plate is broken, and 2) how badly it's broken. You're probably better off going to a podiatrist or orthopedist's office than an er, though.

Ice and elevation is good for the first 24 hours, but after that, doesn't really make much of a difference.

If it's broken, the odds are very much in your favor it's not a serious injury, and other than wearing a hard-soled shoe and taking it easy, there is little else to do. You can't tape a big toe to a 2nd toe, since these toes move in different directions during the gait cycle. Trying to tape them together actually increases the pain. But it's important to get it x-rayed to make sure it's not one of those serious kind of growth plate injuries, which potentially can cause growth arrest in the bone, and as the surrounding bones continue to grow normally, a deformity slowly develops.

Hope this helps. Good luck! ...Read more

I recently broke my big toe. When the podiatrist first saw it, he thought it may require surgery but after he took the x-ras, he said my toe was natur?

Heal naturally: Most toe fractures do not require any surgery. Mostly it requires a hard bottom post op shoe and about 4 weeks to heal. If the you do not require surgery then it is a good thing and it will heal by itself. However, continue seeing your podiatrist as repeated x-rays are needed to evaluate the healing process. ...Read more

I broke my big toe. Pain is still horrible after a week. Will I need a cast or boot?

Broken toe.: Only if the pain is horrible after a week. Just kidding. A broken big toe could require a boot, usually not a cast. I assume xrays have been taken. The great toe is a heavy wt-bearing part of the body and needs to be protected when fractured or broken. If you haven't seen a doctor yet, you should. If you were told that you could be in a walking boot, an ankle walking boot suffice. Amazon. ...Read more
