Referral: Most thyroid nodules are benign and this is a common problem. However, this can be serious. Usually a fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) will determine if the nodule is cancerous or benign. This test can get right to the bottom of the issue. Often an ultrasound is needed to determine the characteristics of a thyroid nodule. You need a pathologist and radiologist you can trust! ...Read more

My dear colleague; I'm an endocrinologist in Turkey and I do thyroid ultrasound. I'm interested in exophytic thyroid nodules. Until now, I couldn't find the explanation of "exophytic"term for thyroid nodules. Thank you very much for your good explanation.
Nodular goitre: With time and exogenous stimulation, nodular goitres develop in contrast to the solitary adenoma that transforms to cancer. On palpation of many goitres a mass, not present within either lobe but essentially hanging from one of the lobes may be identified. This is an exogenous lesion arising subcapsular and bulging in an external or exophytic position. ...Read more

Yes: All thyroid nodules that are solitary and on scan are considered to be cold and not actively producing hormone have the potential to become malignant. As one gets older if there is a malignancy it tends to be more aggressive so that with spread to nodes there can be compliations. In the 20 age group tumors are less aggressive with cure rate high. Leaving a benign adenoma can result in cancer ...Read more
I went to a gp and he told me I have a thyroid nodule. 1. How do I treat this? 2. What are the side effects?
Common problem: Thyroid nodules are common in the population, especially in women. Most nodules are benign and require no treatment. The issue is to establish that it is benign. If the nodule is over 1 cm in size, we usually do a fine needle biopsy to make sure it is benign. As long as your thyroid function is normal, there is no side effect to the nodule unless it becomes very large. ...Read more

I have a thyroid nodule (2.5cm) fna said they got 2 samples of less than 2mm. Is that enough sample for me to be confident in benign result?
Thyroid FNA: More important than the size of the samples is whether they were able to see any cells on the specimen. If the sample is not large enough to rule out abnormal cells then you may require a repeat fna. ...Read more

I have a thyroid nodule. A scan revealed that it is solid with irregular borders, and I have increased vascularity, what does this mean?
I have a thyroid nodule but the ultra sound said it was small and no need for further treatment. Why do I still feel like I am chocking?
Must b another cause: Choking sensation in the throat can be due to something other than an abnormality in the thyroid. Because the anatomy in that area includes the vocal cords, the trachea, esophagus, epiglottis; abnormalities in any of these other areas may cause a choking sensation. See doc. Common cause is swelling of the larynx or vocal cord from acid reflux which is treated with a trial of an acid reducer med. ...Read more
I have a thyroid nodule that has increased in size from mm's to 1.6cm and hypoechoic associated with calcification. Increased blood flow also?
Needle Biopsy: It is likely that there will be a recommendation for a needle biopsy of the nodule. This is done usually under ultrasound guidance and local anesthesia as an out-patient procedure. If there is evidence of a cancer then further treatment such as surgery will be required. Good luck. ...Read more

I have a thyroid nodule. I've had blood work done an a ultrasound. The doc is a little worried now have to have a nuclear scan. Should I be worried?
Hyperthyroid?: Hi. For your nodule, unless you're hyperthyroid, the nuclear medicine scan will tell you NOTHING your doc doesn't already know from looking at your TSH and free T4. Assuming you're NOT hyperthyroid, the scan will show a "cold" nodule, which we already know if your TSH is normal. You need a fine needle aspiration biopsy for cytology to see if it's cancer. That's it. Then proceed from there. ...Read more
Are thyroid nodules always thyroid cancer? I have a thyroid nodule and my levels of some thyroid hormone are low. My doctor wants to do more tests, but I don’t really understand what he said. Do I have cancer, or could it be something else?
Over: Over 95% of thyroid nodules are benign. Therefore the risk of cancer is low, but can be increased in younger or older people, people with a family history of thyroid cancer, or people who have been exposed to radiation (x-rays do not count). Sometimes benign thyroid nodules can secrete extra thyroid hormone, more than your body needs. If your doctor is suspicious of this, they will order a nuclear study called a thyroid uptake and scan. If a nodule is over a centimeter, that is when we usually will perform a fine needle aspiration to get a sample of cells in the nodule. If nodules are under a centimeter and there is no evidence of over activity, we can simply monitor with serial ultrasounds. ...Read more
