Brittle Yellow Toenails
What can I do if my toenails have become yellow and brittle. Could these be symptoms of type 2 diabetes?
Keep in mind...: The fda has recently come out with a blanket statement that toenail fungus can not be cured. It is "managed" by a number of modalities, but it can always come back in the future. Oral antifungal medicines (lamisil), topical medications (formula 3), laser therapy, surgical removal, homeopathic applications (tea tree oil). Talk to a podiatrist for what will be best and most effective for you.See 2 more doctor answers
Tape: Tape may help. Moisturize. Trim, file, sand the nail to its neatest and smallest size.
I just noticed that my 2 big toenails are kinda yellow. There's no itch or anything like that, but is this bad &/or contagious?
Fungus vs other: Onychomycosis (fungus) is a common reason for nails to turn color and lift off the nail bed. This is usually difficult to cure but can involve pills and laser treatments. If this happened acutely, perhaps the yellow color is tannic acid fro a new pair of boots or shoes you bought and this should simply fade off. See a dermatogist if the probl persists or spreads.See 1 more doctor answer
My toenails have been getting a light yellow tint to them and the surface feels a little uneven. What OTC medication should I use to treat this?
First you need: To determine what is wrong. Is the discoloration due to a fungus? Or possibly from nail polish you were wearing? If you are looking for an otc, you can try tea tree oil. If it is nsuccessful, you might just have to try the local podiatrist for further evaluation and treatment.See 1 more doctor answer
My big toenail is yellow just at the top. How long does it take for it to get completely better when using something like curanail to treat it?
It REALLY varies...: If the Curanail works how it is supposed to, and the "infected" portion is as you describe, it could still take 2-3 months for the nail to grow out enough to be "better." The problem is that Curanail is just one of the many topical over-the-counter products that may not be as effective as advertised. If it works - good for you! If not, see a doctor for something with a more proven track record.
The white part of my nails. Or supposed to be, for about two weeks now have been slightly yellow and brittle. They also have a lot of verticle lines?
See a doctor: Or specifically a dermatologist. This sounds as if you may have onychomycosis (a fungus infection of the nail), but without the ability to see this it is impossible to diagnose long distance. Good luck.
My friends toenails went from yellow to white possible discolour and one has formed a bump. She was wondering what she could do to sort this and how?
See a dermatologist: There are crucial details and history missing from your question. Your friend's best chance for help is to see a skin specialist.
Fungus: Most likely fungal toeails.Get a more detailed answer ›
All my toenails, except for both of the big ones, grow an extra toenail on top of the first toenail. No yellowing. They come off easy. What causes it?
Split perso-nail-ity: This sounds like a nail root phenomena. The root appears to be making nails with possibly a split layer of nail making cells. To remove all doubt, see a specialist with knowledge of how nails grow.
Fungal infection: Toenail fungus is an infection of the bed and plate underlying the surface of the nail. You should treat toenail fungus as soon as it appears. Yellow toenails are a side effect of the presence of toenail fungus. The more discolored the nail, the further along the infection. There are many antifungal agents in the market to use from.See 1 more doctor answer
Probably a fungus: Fungus of the nails will cause yellowing and thickening.
I clipped off half my toenail, now it's growing back yellow and it's becoming ingrown. What's wrong?
Depends on the cause: Some causes of nail discoloration include trauma due to tight shoes, infection, and medication side effects. You should try wearing shoes with a higher wider toe box. Get the feet inspected by a professional to determine the cause of the problem, as treatment varies depending on the diagnosis.
My two big toenails are rigged, yellow/black and one has a thin, vertical line. Fungus or something more serious?
See the podiatrist: The description indicates that the nail plate is deformed and fungus is able to infect that weakened structure, but go to a podiatrist and have it examined because the thin, vertical line your describe may be something else (like melanoma) and may need to biopsied.See 2 more doctor answers
What do you suggest if I clipped off half my toenail, now it's growing back yellow and it's becoming ingrown. What do I do?
See podiatrist: Go see a podiatrist who deals with these issues many times a day. An ingrown toenail should be treated before it becomes infected.
