Play it safe!: Any bright red blood per rectum is abnormal. This may be as simple as a hemorrhoid problem or as ominous as crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. I would be worried. Consider that the blood could have come from farther up than the sigmoidoscope reached -- you could have a big problem that went undiagnosed. Possibly: If the bleeding will not stop then she should go to the emergency room. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to die from hemorrhoidal bleeding. When I was an intern I pled my case regarding a patient that I was taking care of and it fell on deaf ears. The woman was dead by the next morning. The resident above me refuse to believe that someone could die from hemorrhoids and was looking further up in the gut for the source of bleeding when it was so obvious to me that the massive hemorrhaging was coming from the hemorrhoids. Have also seen one of my own psychiatric patients almost die for the same reason. She was discharged from the hospital with massive hemorrhoidal bleeding. Surgeons want to put off the surgery until monday. I had her husband stay up with her all night to observe her bleeding and when the massive bleeding started up again he got her to the emergency room her life was saved in time. 7 years ago, had bright red rectal bleeding after bm. Hurt to have bm most of the time I saw blood. Dr saw a fissure on exam. By the time I had sigmoidoscopy fissure was gone and no bleeding anymore. Unlikely he missed cancer? No symptoms since.

Blood on toilet paper is far more likely to b due to internal hemorrhoids, constipation, or rectal irritation from something else. Kyrea - i'd suggest speaking with your gynecologist or a colorectal doc. If it is cyclical, and from your rectum, as you desribe - i'd be suspicious of endometriosis.
