Breathing Into A Paper Bag (Overview)

Breathing into a paper bag has traditionally been used to treat hyperventilation. However, it has generally fallen out of favor as a standard treatment because more dangerous conditions like heart attack can mimic hyperventilation, and reducing oxygen in that situation can be deadly. Doctors still sometimes recommend it in those with anxiety disorder and who are at low risk for heart attack or asthma.

Old wives tale about breathing into a paper bag when you're hyperventilating?

Old wives tale about breathing into a paper bag when you're hyperventilating?

It works: Paper bags have been used for years to treat hyperventilation syndrome often associated with panic attacks. Rebreathing the air we exhale makes us inhale more co2 and helps us to quickly add the co2 back into our bloodstreams, restoring the balance of the blood gases. ...Read more

Does breathing into a paper bag really help panic and hyperventilation?

Does breathing into a paper bag really help panic and hyperventilation?

Yes: If not for the "psychological" benefit, breathing into and out of a closed paper bag will allow carbon dioxide to accumulate in the arterial blood, thus enhancing blood flow to the brain. Theoretically, this could reduce the chance of a fainting spell. Would not recommend doing it for too long though. ...Read more

Is it true that breathing into a paper bag when having a panic attack calms you down?

Is it true that breathing into a paper bag when having a panic attack calms you down?

Hyperventilation: When having a panic attack the body goes into full-blown "fight or flight mode" with rapid breathing that blows off so much co2 that your blood chemistry is altered. By breathing into a paper bag (my favorite is one that recently had donuts in it) you rebreathe some co2 and restore you pH balance and thus feel physically better. ...Read more

Hyperventilation, what size paper bag?

Hyperventilation, what size paper bag?

Whatever: Can you still find a paper bag? The idea is to build up co2 levels so the smallest bag that will cover both your nose and mouth and hold a good breath would work. But a big bag would probably work almost as fast if that's all you have. Plastic would not be a good idea. ...Read more

Can I use a paper towel if I don't have any more gauges and I do not have any tea bags.

Can I use a paper towel if I don't have any more gauges and I do not have any tea bags.

What for?: The gauze pads are to dry some place. They are sold both as sterile and non sterile. Depending what area you are drying most areas don't have to be done in a sterile manner. I am assuming that you are not performing surgery upon yourself at home. Use some common sense. If an area that you did clean with nonsterile material starts getting red, swollen, painful it is probably infected and needs 2 B ...Read more

How long does ecoli live on paper or plastic? Hard plastic, Not garbage bags. I may have to wash his comforter depending on the answer :(

Wash the comforter!: E-coli can live for many days on surfaces like plastic - even steel. It is just a bad decision to cut corners and end up quite ill. Don't be lazy - or hire someone to do it after telling them the situation and paying their price. Or throw away the comforter in as safe a manner as possible. Smile - it's not the hardest task in the world. And you can feel really proud of yourself afterward. ...Read more

Botulism: Your symptoms were suggestive of botulism but not diagnostic and since your respiratory system showed improvement you were fortunate if you were indeed exposed to the botulism toxin. I've experienced bowel movements the color of a light brown paper bag lately. Is that normal?

Stools now "pale": Bile & your gut's bacterial flora account in large part for color & volume of stool. Absence of bile results in pale (acholic) stool. Lots of other things also affect stool appearance: ingested foods, medications (peptobismol, antacids), swallowed blood or bleeding from gut, infection/antibiotics, inflammation, maldigestion, & the amount of mucus mixed with stool, as well as transit time of food. ...Read more
