Breastfeeding Hard Stools
13 month old son has been constipated since birth. Taking miralax (polyethylene glycol). Stools are soft but hard to pass. He screams in pain, cries & grunts when pooping.
Needs specialist: If the stools are soft and your son is still crying in pain with bowel movements, a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist (specialist in stomach and bowel problems) is in order. It is possible that there is an anatomical problem which is interfering with normal stooling. Ask your primary doctor if a referral is needed. ...Read more

4wk old /c bright green mucuousy pooh, about a tbsp. Breastfeed, normally have mustard yellow stool. No temp , baby feeding well. Concern?
2 mo old baby passes lots smelly farts. Poop mustard yellow, smelly. Sometimes in pain. Formula and breast fed. Tried ovol, gripe, massage. Concern?
Baby poop: What you are describing all sounds very normal. The poop is a reflection of the bacteria in the baby's gut as well as your diet (as you are sometimes breast feeding). Babies often cry when trying to have bowel movements - it's a new thing for them and they have to learn how to relax a sphincter and at the same time are bearing down to push the stool out - they get frustrated/cry - it gets better ...Read more
4 month old baby given gerber purees. Has hard stools and hot body. No temparature. Breast milk not sufficient and baby refuses formula no matter what?
My 4 month old baby girl strains a lot while passing stools. She is on breastfeed and once on formula feed. Stools are not very dry though.
It is common: It is normal and very common for parents to complain about it. Keep breast feeding. Normal range for stooling varies. It is normal to have one bowel movement once every 2-3 days and also every time when you feed her, especially if you breast feed as long as there is no vomiting and baby eats well. You can try putting her on her tummy; remember though only when she is awake and you watching her. ...Read more
My 5 month old breast fed daughter consistently has liquid bowel movements, she's gaining weight well, are liquid poops distinct from diarrhea?
May not be diarrhea: If a baby is eating, behaving, and growing fine... But has loose poops that can squirt out of her butt, she may be normal, especially if breastfed. Some breastfed babies have loose stools (a bit looser than spaghetti sauce). If she pushes her poop out, it will come out somewhat liquid. If she is very gassy, has smelly poop, or is not growing well, a doctor should evaluate for digestive problems. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

18 month baby constant constipation, very hard stools and cries when pooping. The only relief is glycerin. Tried prune juice and veggies nothing works?
Call Pediatrician: Likely just extracts too much water from stool, leading to constipation. Can try apple juice as often better tolerated than prune juice (in quantity needed to help). Ask pediatrician about daily use of MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) (1/4-1/2 cap in bottle of juice) to help keep stools softer from "above" so glycerin needed less often "below.". ...Read more
Hi my daughter is 10 months and she been having hard stools (balls )she cries bc it's hard to pass stool what can I give her to make her stool soft?
Increase fluids: Most important to intermittent constipation is to make sure the child is getting plenty of fluids. At 10 months, can add a few ounces of water to daily formula intake, and if stools are harder than normal, a few ounces of juice can be added from a cup as well. Don't get into habit of juice from a bottle. Add extra fiber into diet. If persists, talk to doc about what meds may help, like miralax (polyethylene glycol). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Orange watery stool? Abdominal crming, gasy, watery orange stool. Some solid stool, lack of energy.
Hello. : Hello. I can’t diagnose the reason for your orange colored stool. Passing orange feces may mean the stool either isn’t absorbing or isn’t coming in contact with enough bile salt. This can happen if the stool is transiting too quickly through the colon. As a result of moving so rapidly, fluid is not be adequately reabsorbed through the colon which results in liquid feces. Sometimes the problem can be that bile isn’t getting through the bile ducts (i.e., like gallstones). Diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, gallstones & inflammation of the bile ducts are just a few possible reasons for orange stool. If you have been ingesting a lot of antacids that contain aluminum, that can also cause orange stools. Suggest you consult with your doctor on this one. ...Read more

2 month old formula fed baby passing adult-like stool? Semi hard constitency/long tubes. She is very fussy/cries most of the day. Formula change?
In the absence of : diarrhea, vomiting, poor weight gain, eczema, wheezing or other signs of milk protein allergy or milk protein intolerance, I'd say take your baby & a diaper full of stool to her pediatrician, discuss your concerns & wait to see what her physical exam reveals before trying an elimination diet. An elimination diet includes re-introducing the suspected offending food under medical supervision. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

similac advanced to Enfamil Prosobee issues with no bowel movement but normal stools. Then hard stools changed to gentlease 2daysago. No BM yet.
Close Monitoring: Baby's age not listed but infants can go 4-5 days without stool. Type of formula can contribute to constipation but is not the rule & frequent change is usually disruptive, requiring baby to adjust at most & not therapeutic. Make sure you are mixing formula with enough water as directed, do not add extra water.. Stay with Gentleease,. See doctor for thorough re-check if stools continue to be hard. ...Read moreSee 4 more doctor answers
