Any new pain in the breast should be evaluated for a palpable lump or with a mammogram. If you had trauma to the area you would probably know. Fairly common: Best option to start with OB or primary doc. Yes, you can get breast abscesses not related to breast feeding. Cysts are also very common. Many women can have perfectly normal mammogram/ultrasound and have pain. Should have those 2 tests, to make sure all is well. Common problem: Fibrocystic disease/changes is very common in women. This is most often seen during the menstrual cycle. Breast feel lumpy and painful which is caused by cyst formation (fluid filled areas) due to hormonal changes. Some women may have these changes without being on their menstrual cycle. Caffeine may cuase the cysts to be overactive resulting in pain. This is not related to cancer.

These along with age related changes can affect hormone balance in your body. A hormone called prolactin can cause milk discharge, and changes in estrogen can create breast tenderness. The pain can be aggravated by caffeine intake, hormone intake and stress. Decreasing all of these can help relieve the pain. Make sure you have had a mammogram and the results are negative. Contact your surgeon: Even though your ovaries are still present, the amount of circulating hormone may be disproportionate with estrogen only being secreted. This happens when ovulation is not ongoing and able to produce progesterone to balance the "equation" resulting in breast swelling.
