Breast pain ?: Breasts are stimulated with estrogen, which is increased at age 44 secondary to ovaries which take more stimulation for ovulation to occur. Your breasts are affected and mastitis is more frequent. A hysterectomy by itself will not stop ovarian hormones from being stimulated, so even without "periods" the hormones can affect your breast tissue. ...Read more

My wife says she has been experiencing sharp pains in breasts, sore nipples and pink. She has been breast feeding our new borne. Should we be worried?

Probably not: In the first few days and sometimes week or two of breastfeeding it can be painful. This is especially true if first child. There are many things you can do to relieve pain and the la leche league can be a good resource. My nipples are sore and leaking I have merina coil stopped breast feeding 10 months ago! what does this mean?

My nipples are sore and leaking I have merina coil stopped breast feeding 10 months ago! what does this mean?

Unclear: This depends on what happened with your mild production over these past months... If you said to me you weaned, there was NO MILK WHATSOEVER for 9 months, then leakage started this month, that might make me want to investigate this with careful history, exam and labs. If leakage has been intermittent, and every time you express there is milk, then I would say, just stop checking! ...Read more

It depends...: There are multiple forms of otc cold and congestion medicines. Certainly you should check with your pediatrician or ob-gyn first before taking any medication while breast feeding or while being pregnant. I finished my period a week ago and now have sore nipples and tiny spots on the areola. They feel and look as though I am breast feeding?

Hormonal effects: If your period ended "one week ago" and your period is 5-7 days, you may be having a "double ovulation" which produces twice as much estrogen and progesterone, and the levels can mimic early pregnancy. These levels of hormone can have a temporary effect on your areolae, making them tender and slightly swollen. This is not abnormal, but if your next period is "late", get a serum pregnancy test. ...Read more

I've a 7wk old baby.. I have just started a cold and sore throat, sinus problem. Since I'm breast feeding, can my baby fall sick? Am taking aleve (naproxen).

Breastfeeding +cold: Unfortunately, yes, but most likely from being close to you when you sneeze or cough as the reason. Try wearing an earloop mask from the pharmacy to prevent viral spread to your baby. Your breast milk will contain antibodies against the virus your baby needs to fight the infection if caught, so please continue to breastfeed. Short term use of Aleve (naproxen) is fine. ...Read more
