Is this normal? Been on birth control for 9 months. Forgot a pill. Doubled up the next day, but started bleeding. I figured it was breakthrough bleeding. Have had brown discharge the past 3 days following. Is this normal? Now it's turned back into blood,

Likely not: Most women who take birth control pills have no side effects, but the most common side effect in the first 1-3 months is irregular bleeding that gets better over time. Missed pills can also cause breakthrough bleeding. There's little evidence that 1 pill is more or less likely to cause breakthrough. Most people who take within 1-2 hrs don't have breakthrough. I'd suggest continuing to take pills. ...Read more

I'm on birth control and I still have 3 weeks till my next period. For a couple of days I've had brown, (fresh), bloody discharge. What's going on?

Spotting on the pill: Bleeding while taking a birth control pill is one of the most common side effects women experience. This can happen even if you don't miss any pills, but is more common if you miss one or two pills in the pack. Keep taking your pills every day, and try not to miss any. If the bleeding gets heavier, or if you don't get your normal period when expected, call your gynecologist for an appointment. ...Read more

I have doc's appt soon. If I say I have bloody discharge for a week, do I have to take pelvic exam? I don't want to. I'm on birth control pill.

Why: If you have bloody discharge, it may be from a disturbance of the internal female anatomy like uterine cancer. If you hide the truth from your doc, the potential outcome can be fatal. If you exclude the proper exams from the evaluation process, you do the same thing. If you want the best care possible, tell the truth and discuss the process of evaluation with your doc.
