Does oxygen desaturation on a long-haul flight (13.5 hours) cause any sort of brain damage to a baby? I've read they go as low as 80% and lower.

Does oxygen desaturation on a long-haul flight (13.5 hours) cause any sort of brain damage to a baby? I've read they go as low as 80% and lower.

Odd comment: Babies with a normal lung structure will maintain normal oxygen levels on a long flight the same way any adult or older child would. There is no drop in the blood oxygen level during a flight. Pressurized air craft are a safe mode of travel for infants. Someone is providing you with goofy information. ...Read more

What is the initial treatment, by the emt's, for brain injury in an infant to prevent further brain damage?

ABC's: Airway, breathing, circulation. These are the tenets of "in the field" first aid. They establish an airway (can be basic or actual endotracheal tube), breathing (mouth to mouth or bag/mask ventilation can also give oxygen) and (circulation: chest compressions)... That is generally all that is at their disposal. ...Read more

Is it possible to have an unremarkable normal brain MRI for an infant that endured a brain trauma? If it's normal does it rule out brain damage?

Is it possible to have an unremarkable normal brain MRI for an infant that endured a brain trauma? If it's normal does it rule out brain damage?

Yes and No: First question a definite YES....not only infant...ANYONE....people suffer traumatic brain injuries all the time clinically but have normal MRI's and certainly it is also true that a normal MRI does not rule out brain injury since we cannot see all the possible ways a brain can be injured using MRI. There are newer sequence acquisitions that are getting around that problem though but not right now ...Read more

Can an infant ever recover from brain damage from bacterial encephalitis?

Infant plasticity: While an adult with an identical injury may be stuck when injured nerves cannot heal, an infant has better healing powers & may be able to rewire past injured areas.Since their system had not completed adult wiring at the time of injury their "plasticity" makes better healing possible.I have seen some remarkable improvements in kids over the years when many held little hope.Improvement is possible. ...Read more
