See an orthopedist: If you are continuing to have pain and problems, you should see your orthopedist. They know your history and can do an exam that will best indicate the next step in your care. I'd consider that physical therapy may be of benefit. ...Read more

Hi, i think i have bowed legs and im almost 17, do i need to get braces on my legs and does bowed legs affect my height or affect my growth.

Bowed legs: Hello JunedA, I like your question. Bowed legs in adolescents is commonly due to being overweight. but can also be caused by vitamin D deficiency, trauma, or kidney disease. Because you're 17, you're almost done growing anyway but I think going to a local doctor to be evaluated for vitamin deficiencies and other causes would be a great way for you to start your healthy adulthood. Good luck :) ...Read more

Can knee braces straighten bowed legs in adults?

Not likley: Either you are genetically destined to be bow legged or increasing wear along the inside of the knee with time is causing you to become bow-legged. Rarely a disease process could contibute to bowing of the legs. See an orthopedist for clarity in diagnosis. Unloader braces can be helpful with pain and function but cannot straighten an adult bowed knee. ...Read more

Could a 14 year old girl get leg braces to help straighten her legs? Would it work?

Could a 14 year old girl get leg braces to help straighten her legs? Would it work?

Not likely: There are actually very few things that are even "brace correctable" despite what grandma tells you. And certainly none at that advanced age that would come up now that you didn't have under treatment before, for instance, problems because of cerebral palsy. Need to talk to a pediatric orthopedist to see if the problem even is with her legs not being straight. ...Read more

My 5 yr old grandson walks on his toes alot. He can walk normally 1 doctor wants him to wear braces on both legs for 4 months i thinkl their over reacting but hey what do I know

As : As long as he is able to walk normally, and you are able to bring his foot up above 90 degrees to his leg, and he's just choosing to walk on his tippy-toes, i don't think there is any reason to be concerned. It's actually pretty common when toddlers are just starting to walk to toe-walk like this, but less common in a 5 year old. The only word of caution I have for you, however, is to watch for other signs of lack of coordination or developmental delays. ...Read more

Strange, fleeting but increasing uncomfortable leg sensations causing leg(s) to buckle. What might be causing this? History of disc fractures, sciatic pain, mostly on one side, born breach, wore braces for first 3 years of life, had a serious back injury

Strange, fleeting but increasing uncomfortable leg sensations causing leg(s) to buckle. What might be causing this? History of disc fractures, sciatic pain, mostly on one side, born breach, wore braces for first 3 years of life, had a serious back injury

My : My biggest concern, especially considering your history of disc problems and sciatica as well as previous serious back injury would be that the buckling and strange painful leg sensations are due to ongoing and perhaps progressive nerve irritation/entrapment from your lower spine. While nonspecific, numbness or tingling may also be present with nerve damage. More serious signs of problems, necessitating immediate evaluation would include loss of bowel or bladder control. You really should be evaluated by at least your primary care physician if not an orthopedic specialist. ...Read more

My 2 yr old son has crooked legs. Gillette's told us they don't do braces anymore and wait until 4 yr old then do surgery. Wonder if braces would help?

Define Crooked: The typical newborn & early toddler looks bowlegged until about 3, knock need from 4-5 and shifts in development have them straight legged at 6-7. A kid with legs that do not mirror each other is more likely to need corrective work. I haven't had a kid need either braces or surgery in 3 decades of monitoring thousands. Rare exceptions occur & are usually handled by children's hospital specialists. ...Read more
