What does a high diastolic reading in a BP reading stand for? What are the causes and implications? In addition to drugs, what can a patient do?

Blood pressure: Blood pressure readings give two numbers. The higher number is systolic. The lower number is diastolic. Systolic is when the heart is contracting/pumping blood. Diastolic is during the time the heart is relaxing. Hi readings for either one is considered abnormal and should be treated if persistent. Other than medication, weight-loss and low-salt diet may help lower these numbers. ...Read more

It is not unusual to be high immediately after moderate - vigorous exercise but your BP will drop down to normal (120/80 or less) after resting for a few hours. If it stays persistently elevated even when you don't exercise then you will need to follow up with your doctor. Take care ...Read more

Anxiety and BP: Your high BP reading in the dr's office suggests worried thinking/anxiety associated with the dr visit. This by itself may not require anti-anxiety medication, but if you suffer from anxiety in other situations it may be helpful to consider it. Cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy may be of help in reducing your anxiety. ...Read more

Measure BP correctly: Probably the second or third. Remember that if you have to measure BP you should do it after resting 5-10 min, relaxed, sitting down and not after rushing and worried about bp. I am dibetic. Is a blood sugar reading of 180 after eating to high?

Could be: First of all, you are NOT a "diabetic." You have diabetes.
Next, I do not know how old you are or what meds you are taking. Also, don't know if you have diabetes related complications such as hypoglycemia and heart disease. We try to keep the 2 hour after eating blood glucose levels below 140 mg/dL if possible. Some believe that less than 180 is also OK. Ask your doctor for clarification. ...Read more

What do you suggest if my dad is 75 years old, his BP reading from 2weeks are 140/20 or 130/10 mm hg. What is the cause?

Don't worry: The cause is likely that he's 75 and has stiff arteries. Alternatively, he may have aortic regurgitation. The low diastolic BP is an artifact. If you placed a catheter in his his aorta, the true measure of central BP, it would be higher. His true diastolic BP is, no doubt low, but not that low. If he's feeling okay, don't sweat it. ...Read more

I'm hypertensive. I'm having some difficulty breathing now; with a BP reading of 127/87; and pulse of 95. Should I worry?

Rapid pulse: A pulse of 95, at rest is faster than normal and it may raise the bp. 127/87 would be mildly elevated for your age. A check-up is recommended to find out why your pulse is rapid. Some causes are overactive thyroid, anemia, anxiety, fever, etc, . ...Read more

Hypertension defined: Everyone's blood pressure rises and falls during the day in response to activities. During exercise, it is normal for the blood pressure to rise.
