Bowels Not Working
At most, 3-5 days...: For elective hernia repair in an assumed healthy man of 49, the potential undesirable effects from anesthesia and surgery should fade and disappear in 3-5 days. If persisting, check with surgeon for a clinical assessment for unusual event although it's rare. That is reasonable. More on healthy living? To www. Formefirst. 24 hours: It should occur within 24 hours and if it hasn't contact your surgeon.
I'm on laxative multiple x daily due to bowels not working. Today very sick, slight fever, burning in upper abd., very nausea, heartbeat visible in ab?
Really NOT good...: Before you contemplate long term laxative dependency, seek medical evaluation--rule out metabolic causes of constipation (e.g. Low thyroid or adrenal conditions), distinguish slow versus normal transit constipation, consider a primary rectal dysfunction that may be treatable with biofeedback, check for structural pathology or extrinsic impingement, or intermittent ileus (e.g. Pseudo-obstruction).
Move: Patients can definitely have trouble with their usual bowel regimen after spine surgery for many reasons. Early mobilization and limiting the amount of narcotic medications and getting back to your usual diet as soon as possible are the most common interventions used. Thank you for the question.See 1 more doctor answer
Hi there I have a real Bloated Stomach & my bowels seem to be working ok - waiting on a Abdominal Ultrasound. Pain still in left side. 3 Spleens shown?
Severe lower abdominal pain for the last two days, bowels have not been working properly, lack of appetite, somewhat nauseous, not pregnant?
See details: Severe abdominal pain requires a prompt evaluation. There are several causes, some of which can be serious. See your doctor now or go to the er.
Pa diagnosed very silent bowels. Treated with ducolax. So far lots of loose or liquid bm's. Does that mean it's working? Is very silent bowels bad?
Word games: I'm afraid our attempts to communicate with patients are often misunderstood. I would call"very quiet bowel sounds" an observation, not a diagnosis. Perhaps, with the ducolax, s/he assumed you were constipated. Bowel sounds can be active or quiet at different times in the same patient over a period of minutes or hours. By itself, it has no specific meaning.See 1 more doctor answer
Exercise& Bowel move: Lack of exercise can contrbute to constipation beacuse inactivity slows the digestive system. Execise or working out regularly will help with good bowel movements. If you are already regular you may find you have more bowel movements. Bowel respond even more if you are consistent and work out same time every day.
For what length of time do orallly administered treatments of bowel cancer take to show they are working?
Talk to your doctor: You have bowel cancer and have been given an oral medication to help. Talk to your doctor and discuss what time it should take for the effect to be noticed. It is always important to talk to your doctor before you leave the office and understand what the expectations of any new medication. Also talk to your pharmacist to see if any interaction exists between a new and old medication.
Can a gallbladder with no stones only working at 15% cause constipation? My bowel habits have changed and I'm always constipated.
Not gall bladder: You should take fiber foods (see site below for info). Or you could take a fiber laxative like Metamucil. In either case drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. I have a colonoscopy tomorrow. I took my bowel prep of about an hour ago. In how much time will it start working? Will a gatorade/miralax mix not work?
May not work: A gatorade and MiraLAX combination is not a common bowel prep in my experience. Miralax is an excellent laxative but if only one dose is taken, it is not likely to clean the colon out as well as is optimal for colonoscopy. A single dose might not produce a bm for a day or 2. Gatorade is an electrolyte-rich drink but not likely as effective as GoLytely or other polyethylene glycol solutions.See 3 more doctor answers
I have myelomeningocele spina bifida I use senokot (senna) for bowel management once a week but it has stopped working is there anything else I can do?
There are a number: Of other medications for bowel movement, including the magic bullet if you are looking for suppository meds. If oral is preferred, can consider miralax, (polyethylene glycol) magnesium citrate for short term use only. Do you use any narcotic medications? These obviously can slow bowels and there is a new peripheral acting only Narcan that doesn't block pain but does clear bowels of opioid issues. Hope that helps!See 1 more doctor answer
Sudden onset bowel irregularity - fiber, probiotics, water, etc not working! Laxatives only offer temporary relief. Causes?
Constipation?: If you have not seen a gastroenterologist yet, you should see one to determine what is happening.
I just started taking linzess, the highest dose. How long will it take for it to start working and my bowel movements to become regular?
What pain medication can I take for irritable bowel disease? Bentyl (dicyclomine) has no effect and 5mg of percocet is no longer working. The pain is excruciating.
Makes it worse: Opiates are BAD and temporary solutions to any kind of intestinal disorder. They may temporarily mask the pain, but by also slowing down the activity of the bowel they ultimately make the symptoms worse. Anticholinergic drugs like bentyl (dicyclomine) may or may not work. See your PCP or a gastroenterologist to make sure you have the right diagnosis and the right treatment. There are many available options.
I've read that if taking miralax (polyethylene glycol) longer than 3 months, may cause the bowel to stop working on their own when not taking the product anymore. True?
It's been 4days since I've had a bowel, I tried laxatives and there not working, I try to fleet enema (sodium bisphosphate) and that worked perfect 4 me how often can I use?
See below: Generally they can be used every few days as needed. If the problem persists, see your family doctor.
