Bowels Not Working
At most, 3-5 days...:
For elective hernia repair in an assumed healthy man of 49, the potential undesirable effects from anesthesia and surgery should fade and disappear in 3-5 days. If persisting, check with surgeon for a clinical assessment for unusual event although it's rare. That is reasonable.

I'm on laxative multiple x daily due to bowels not working. Today very sick, slight fever, burning in upper abd., very nausea, heartbeat visible in ab?
Really NOT good...: Before you contemplate long term laxative dependency, seek medical evaluation--rule out metabolic causes of constipation (e.g. Low thyroid or adrenal conditions), distinguish slow versus normal transit constipation, consider a primary rectal dysfunction that may be treatable with biofeedback, check for structural pathology or extrinsic impingement, or intermittent ileus (e.g. Pseudo-obstruction). ...Read more

Hi there I have a real Bloated Stomach & my bowels seem to be working ok - waiting on a Abdominal Ultrasound. Pain still in left side. 3 Spleens shown?
Severe lower abdominal pain for the last two days, bowels have not been working properly, lack of appetite, somewhat nauseous, not pregnant?
Pa diagnosed very silent bowels. Treated with ducolax. So far lots of loose or liquid bm's. Does that mean it's working? Is very silent bowels bad?
Word games: I'm afraid our attempts to communicate with patients are often misunderstood. I would call"very quiet bowel sounds" an observation, not a diagnosis. Perhaps, with the ducolax, s/he assumed you were constipated. Bowel sounds can be active or quiet at different times in the same patient over a period of minutes or hours. By itself, it has no specific meaning. ...Read more

You should take fiber foods (see site below for info). Or you could take a fiber laxative like Metamucil. In either case drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless.

I have a colonoscopy tomorrow. I took my bowel prep of about an hour ago. In how much time will it start working? Will a gatorade/miralax mix not work?
May not work: A gatorade and MiraLAX combination is not a common bowel prep in my experience. Miralax is an excellent laxative but if only one dose is taken, it is not likely to clean the colon out as well as is optimal for colonoscopy. A single dose might not produce a bm for a day or 2. Gatorade is an electrolyte-rich drink but not likely as effective as GoLytely or other polyethylene glycol solutions. ...Read more

There are a number: Of other medications for bowel movement, including the magic bullet if you are looking for suppository meds. If oral is preferred, can consider miralax, (polyethylene glycol) magnesium citrate for short term use only. Do you use any narcotic medications? What pain medication can I take for irritable bowel disease? Bentyl (dicyclomine) has no effect and 5mg of percocet is no longer working. The pain is excruciating.
Makes it worse: Opiates are BAD and temporary solutions to any kind of intestinal disorder. They may temporarily mask the pain, but by also slowing down the activity of the bowel they ultimately make the symptoms worse. Anticholinergic drugs like bentyl (dicyclomine) may or may not work. See your PCP or a gastroenterologist to make sure you have the right diagnosis and the right treatment. There are many available options. ...Read more

Haven't had a bowel movement in 9 days. What do I do? Have tried laxatives as well as fiber bars, nothing is working.
It: It is crucial you seek medical attention. The constipation can be due to a bowel obstruction, which is best described by a small or large blockage in the intestines. Continued obstruction can cause a perforation of the bowels - where the fecal matter punctures the intestines. This can be life threatening. I recommend going to an urgent care or emergency room. If the constipation can not be relieved with enemas or other treatments, further tests, such as abdominal xray or ultrasounds studies will need to be performed. Get help. ...Read more
