Bowel Movements Formula Fed Babies
Soft, yellowish poop: Formula-fed babies older than a week should have yellowish poops at least as thick as mustard or thick spaghetti sauce. Breastfeeding babies can have looser poops. Formula-fed babies tend to have firmer poops, but poop that holds shape could be too firm for the first 3-4 months of life. Poop gets darker, with brown/green colors blended in, and also gets firmer, as a baby gets older. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
The gastrointestinal tract starts at the mouth, travel down the tunnel (esophagus), which connects to the stomach, which then empties into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum---the three parts of the small intestine (@25 feet). This empties into the colon or large intestine (about 5 feet), which then becomes the sigmoid colon, rectum and out the anus. So, every morsel eaten ...Read more
My 3 week old is having a lot of white chunks come through her green bowels. She has had 5 bowel movements today and the chuncks look almost like popcorn pieces. She is a formula fed baby. (changed formulas recently)?
May be a problem: The white chunks imply that baby is not generating enough bile additives to stain the poo a uniform color. There is some bile or you wouldn't have the green mixed in. If this persists through the weekend i would take baby in along with a sample diaper & have you pcp look into this. There are conditions that block the bile from flowing in infancy & success of some rx requires DX before 6wks. ...Read more
BM in formula fed: Infant. They may go from several times a day to once a week. It is very much a variable thing. The idea that an infant has to go everyday or they are not " normal" is just not true. Think about how different we all are as adults. As long as baby does not have a rock hard tender abdomen, no fever, is eating well, and not tearing its little bum when it goes it is okay. What goes in will come out. ...Read more
My 12 week old formula fed infant appears to be constipated. Is there anything I can do to help him have a bowel movement?
Yes, but...: Keep in mind the symptoms of constipation are by definition hard and painful to pass stools. Remember a little pushing and uncomfortableness is ok as long as the stools are soft. Also an every other day stool for some bottle fed babies is fine. Keep in mind the position babies are in as they stool, FLAT ON THEIR BACK. Can you imagine? One oz water and one oz apple juice once will help. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

5 weeks baby crying non stop, no bowel movement in 2 days what should I do have changed bottles, formulas, added karo syprup, warmed bottles mycon drops
How often should a breastfed + formula supplemented baby have a bowel movement? Bowel movement forced by rectal exam after 36 hours of last stool.
BM and baby: Babies poop at very different intervals. GENERALLY breast fed babies poop more frequently than formula fed/supplemented babies. If you child is not in any distress I would NOT be doing rectal probing to force a BM. Only a trained physician should perform this as serious injury can occur to your child. Expect breast fed baby to poop 3-6 times a day and formula fed baby maybe 2-3 a day on ave. ...Read more
I switched my baby's formula from soy milk to elecare. She has not had a bowel movement in a day. Is this normal? She also has been spitting up more
Constipation: Soy formulas are usually more constipating that others, but the opposite can be true as well! The only way to figure out which formula is best for a baby's digestive tendencies is by experience. It can take up to two weeks after a formula change for the results to be known, so rapid formula changes is best avoided. A common trial sequence is: cows milk based, lactose-free, soy, elemental. ...Read more
