Had ulcerative colitis for 15 yrs (confirmed by sigmoid and biopsies). Just had 1st colonoscopy, shows granular, loss of vascular pattern and minor ulcers in ascending colon, cecum, sigmoid and colon. Is this UC or chrons?
Ulcerative colitis: All of the biopsies from colonoscopy showed inflammatory changes consistent with ulcerative colitis. The later is part of the spectrum of IBD but involves only the mucosal layer of the bowel. Prob not: Probably not. Usually pain with a bowel movement is the result of either an anal fissure or external hemorrhoid. Neither one is dangerous and both are easily treated. Diverticulitis will usually give a patient fever and abdominal pain. The pain is more constant in nature. Have symptoms of irritable bowel Recently underwent colonoscopy which came negative. However multiple times toilet, incomplete bowel evacuation feel, soft flat stools persist. Request advise.
Irritable bowel: If your gastroenterologist is comfortable that enough work up has been done to rule out other causes and feels that IBS is the culprit, it is time to start trying to treat it. Adding extra fiber to the diet is a good start. There are medications such as anti-spasmodics which tend to work well in some situations also. Talk to your G.I. doctor about what is the next step. Probably: Colon cancer is unlikely in your age group, but other GI and colon diseases can also cause such symptoms. Have you had your gallbladder evaluated? Remember, colon cancer has minimal symptoms and CT is NOT a great test for it. In sum though low yield I would likely recommend colonoscopy to you based on what I've read. ...Read more

What's your normal?: "Normal" bowel frequency in america ranges from 3 stools daily to one every 3 to 4 days. Many patients have some variability. Maybe you have cause for concern. Does bowel prep medicines relieve severe fecal impaction prior to colonoscopy procedure night before ?
Possibly: Bowel preps are taken to assure that the colon is relatively clean as the scope is passed so that even small lesions in the mucosa can be visualized. Many of the preps contain polyethylene glycol which absorbs liquid into the bowel. This may help but you may need a stool softner. ...Read more

IBS: Normal colonic/ileal biopsies rules out inflammatory bowel disease, as these shows some certain histological features. Also, normal duodenal biopsies from the bulb and second part, rules out celiac disease. IBS can be diarrhea or constipation predominant.
