A gastroenterologist: Is the person to see if you dad has not seen one yet. Is his taking magnesium or other supplements? Too much can case some of this. Is your dad understimulated? He may need activities that interest or challenge him such as dvds, books, walks, visits from friends, etc. I'm sure it's hard for you to arrange for such things but try it a little and see what happens. Prob not: There really should be no negative affect between exercise and bowel control. Many body builders use high protein shakes/bars etc and these can cause loose bowels but still should not have any issue with control. Control issues may be with nerves or rectal muscle weakness. Maybe diet.: Many folks with fecal continence issues can achieve significant improvement without surgery. Foods most likely to cause episodic incontinence or urgency are: milk/milk products (except yogurt), fruits/juices (except bananas), salads/leafy greens, caffeine/chocolate, artificial sweeteners.
