Acth stimulation test results accurate?

Acth stimulation test results accurate?

Depends: I'm assuming no lab errors. If you get a very high cortisol spike after receiving the first dose of ACTH, you are reassured you do not have Addison's. No, or a very small spike, strongly suggests Addison's. In-between... that's why there are specialist endocrinologists. ...Read more

What causes false negative results in a methacholine test?

What causes false negative results in a methacholine test?

True or False Test?: A "false negative" test means the presence of a "confounding variable" that invalidates the test because it nullifies a test that would probably be positive if the variable were absent, like a brochodilator medicine (e.g.various inhalers and pills for asthma). So the test should be done in the absence of those medications, if possible-or-used as a validation as to the medication's effectiveness. ...Read more

I tested positive/treated for strep 5x (rsat), little/no symptoms. Last test was positive, culture was negative. What causes false positive results?

Latent infection?: Some people have recurrent MRSA (multiply-resistant strep aureus) infections that are treated successfully and recur. There is a possibility that they (or you) could be harboring strep in your nose. The sinuses don't have great blood flow, and so may potentially "hide" bacteria. This could explain your odd results. Can paraneoplastic panel (through mayo clinic) be false negative results?

Difficult matter: This test is only useful when it is Abnormal. So you can not say it is false negative . it is designed to be useful only if it shows an abnormality that supports a clinical diagnosis of cancer . ...Read more
