Am post-stroke, read of botox for spasticity. What are the potential negatives? Should I discuss with neurologist, or another type of doctor?

Am post-stroke, read of botox for spasticity. What are the potential negatives? Should I discuss with neurologist, or another type of doctor?

Maybe beneficial: Botox has been shown to be an effective treatment for spasticity caused by a stroke. The negatives would br that it could work too well and cause weakness. If this were to be the case it would be transient. You could also have an allergic reaction to it but this is rare. Another negative is its cost and the fact that your insurance may not cover it. A neurologist or physiatrist would give it. ...Read more

For lower limb spasticity, are there any other injectables available besides Botox? I also do not like the idea of the baclofen pump.

For lower limb spasticity, are there any other injectables available besides Botox? I also do not like the idea of the baclofen pump.

A couple approaches: Several oral meds may work well for spasticity, such as tizanidine, dantrolene sodium, even diazepam. BOTOX is approved by FDA for upper limb but not yet for lower limb. Baclofen outside of pump is mediocre, but coming soon is long-acting form which will make all the difference (might try Amrix for time being). Also, try physical therapy, biofeedback, acupuncture.? medical marijuana? ...Read more

Neurologic symptoms: Botox has an effect of blocking neurologic transmitters. It could be used for long term treatment of chronic skin irritation, but it is not an fda indication. One can first test for the etiology of such a problem by taking a good history, and using a steroid cream for topical treatments.
Remember that Botox acts on the neural chemical release mechanism, stabilizing neuronal membranes. Itblocks all. ...Read more

What kinds of side effects are common with botox? What possible side effects should I be prepared for if I decide to get botox injections? .

Botox: Botox side effects are essentially non existent. The main issues are the results and effects of the needle punctures and action of the botox. A needle puncture can leave a small spot or possible bruise, although this is very unusual. The Botox can be injected in inappropriate locations that can lead to irregular muscle actions. When you first get botox, start simple and see how it goes for you.
