How does the bone density test define osteoporosis?

How does the bone density test define osteoporosis?

Only partly: The dexa scan gives the bone mineral density at the hips, spine and forearm. These scores can predict osteoporosis: 't-score' of less than -2.5 is considered osteoporosis. However, many people suffer osteoporosis fractures despite having better bone densities. So, we also use other factors: age, ethnicity, size, family history, prior fractures, smoking, alcohol, other conditions to predict risks. ...Read more

Bone (Definition)

Bone is a living growing tissue made mostly of collagen (protein that provides soft framework) & the mineral calcium phosphate that adds strength & hardens the framework. Two types of bone are found in the body; cortical (dense compact outer layer) & trabecular (makes up inner layer, ...Read more

Positive, intense uptake on bone scan, lose spinal hardware, bone marrow edema , family history, paternal taking Forteo to strengthen bones. ??ideas?

For one: You probably should remove the hardware. Increased uptake is informing you there is bone activity. You don't state on what phase. This could indicate a fracture or infection.... The doctor should have a clinical suspicion of what he is looking for. If removing the hardware a bone biopsy can be performed if suspecting infection. ...Read more

Mri & bone scan impression is suspecious metastatis, bmd show osteopenia spiral, m.Band negative, s.Cortisol 30 with dexona 1 mg, biopsy needed ?

Perhaps: Discuss your situation with your primary doctor or the one who ordered those tests. If you are feeling uncomfortable, it may be good to get a second opinion from an oncologist (a cancer specialist). Do not wait. Time can make a difference in how you do. ...Read more

Can DEXA scan detect osteomalacia?

Can DEXA scan detect osteomalacia?

Osteomalacia: No. A Dexa detects osteoporosis, or decreased amount of bone matrix. Osteomalacia is an abnormal type of bone, soft bones, abnormal building process. You can have both osteoporosis/malacia, so dexa is still done in the workup to measure the amount of bone. Vit D deficiency, GI disorders that cause malabsorption, kidney disease, liver disease, certain drugs... all are part of the differential. ...Read more

How is bone density tested? How do doctors measure bone density?

How is bone density tested? How do doctors measure bone density?

Bone densitometer: Bone density of the spine, hip and wrist is tested with a bone densitometer, an instrument which utilizes a very small amount of x-rays. Occasionally it is measured by computerized tomography (ct scan). ...Read more

Can a radionuclide bone scan miss degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis and osteopenia?

Can a radionuclide bone scan miss degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis and osteopenia?

Yes: The bone scan shows areas of active bone deposition as "hot". Osteopenia won't be diagnosed as this denotes loss of bone density. Degenerative disc disease and osteoarthritis may not be demonstrated if they are insufficient to cause a bone response (healing or what is medically called an osteoblastic response). ...Read more

Bone density test shows osteoporosis of the spine & hip, hip:-3.03, spine:-3.58 what is the recommended treatment?

Osteoporosis: Sir you have osteoporosis and it may be a bad case. You should discuss this with your doctor at once and obtain medical treatment. Exercise, calcium, and vitamin d are going to be insufficient. You will likely need a bisphosphonate like alendronate, pamidronate, or zoledronic acid. ...Read more

How specific is CT scan to confirm avn in a bone in compare to MRI and bone scan? ?

How specific is CT scan to confirm avn in a bone in compare to MRI and bone scan? ?

MRI or bone scan: It may depend on particular early avascular necrosis in hip is best detected by either MRI or bone scan by showing the decreased blood supply. It is quite specific in majority of cases. Ct can detect later changes of avn such as sclerosis of dead bone or fracture of femoral epiphysis. Avn in small bones of hands and feet may be easier detected by mr examination. ...Read more

How accurate is the heel bone density test?

How accurate is the heel bone density test?

Depends: The diagnosis of osteopenia and osteoporosis are generally made from a dxa machine that tests the spine and hip. The heel test is done with a portable device that is used to screen for bone loss. Although accurate statistically, it is not used clinically unless there is not a device that will measure the spine and hip. The heel should not be used to follow the rate of change in the bone density. ...Read more

Is there anything that can detect bone metastases besides a bone density scan?

Is there anything that can detect bone metastases besides a bone density scan?

Other modalities: Conventional x-rays, ct scans, pet scans and bone scans are the ways that we usually detect bone metastasis in cancer work ups. Bone density scans are not used for this purpose, but instead are used to document osteoporosis, and determine treatment to replace lost calcium in bones that can lead to benign fractures. ...Read more
